Going to NORTHWESTERN?? -- HELP!!

Hi guys,

I'm having trouble making my final list of colleges this summer. So far, I'm sure that I'll be applying to 5 colleges already. I need to decide about the last 5 colleges I'll ultimately apply to.

I'm planning to major in Political Science, but I want the flexibility to change that major in case I don't want to study PS after all. My stats are strong, so I'm not worried about that right now.

Here are the questions I need answered (anyone can answer; alumni or current student answers would be amazing):

Are students taught by professors or TAs or other?

What is student/faculty ratio?

Sequence of courses in majors?

When do you have to declare major?

How hard is it to change major?

Enough majors to transfer into later?

Graduate school placement rates?

Where do those graduates go?

How many students go on to post-graduate study?

Any special relationships w/ post-grad institutions or medical or law schools?

What is the general atmosphere of the school?

Quality of related majors (sociology, economics, etc.)

Overall school quality?

If anyone at Columbia is currently studying Political Science, it would be great to know what you think about the program.

I was also wondering if there is any undergrad Journalism/Communications program @ Northwestern.

Thanks! =)

Not to be harsh, but if you did a little research, you could find the answer to most of these questions on your own. And yes there is an undergrad journalism/comm program at NU, one of the best. >_>

Are students taught by professors or TAs or other? Professors. Discussion sections are led by TA’s.

What is student/faculty ratio? Look it up. This ratio is pretty useless though to be honest.

Sequence of courses in majors? It’s different for each major. Look at the course catalog online if you want to know specifics.

When do you have to declare major? End of sophomore year at the very latest (WCAS).

How hard is it to change major? Not. Unless you’re trying to transfer into Medill or something, then that could be a little difficult.

Enough majors to transfer into later? Define “enough.” But yes, there are quite a few majors available at NU…

Graduate school placement rates? Look it up…

Where do those graduates go? There are lots who go to prestigious grad schools. It’s all on the career website I think. Look it up…

How many students go on to post-graduate study? I think a good number go on to work in industry immediately… Again, look up the numbers.

Any special relationships w/ post-grad institutions or medical or law schools? Like what relationships? You might get some preference for NU’s own medical or law school if you apply, but that’s probably about it. And I’m not even sure if that’s true.

What is the general atmosphere of the school? Look that up too.

Quality of related majors (sociology, economics, etc.)? Econ is top. Don’t know much about Sociology.

Overall school quality? Uh… It’s #12 in the nation according to U.S. News if that means anything to you.

And yes, we have both (they’re separate schools).

Good luck.
