Sup, Ill be attending orientation in july. Ill be coming from norcal. I plan on going by plane. I have a few Qs:

Is there a direct shuttle from LAX to UCLA? If so, how long would the ride be?
Next, what time does the first session at orientation start? Is it 7:45 or 8:45..?

If it is 8:45, then I am thinking about going early in the morning and saving the $50 to stay one night before orientation.

I will be flying down to socal too for orientation. Uhh, if you have friends that are students at ucla, they might be willing to let you stay in their dorm for that one night before orientation. i will probably crash in my friend's plaza for that night.

there is direct shuttle from lax to ucla. it will cost like $15 for 1 way, and the time varies. i was the last guy on teh shuttle to be dropped off and it took the guy like 2-3 hours... if he dropped me off first, i estimate maybe 30 minutes.

there is like 2 shuttle services. one of them is super shuttle and the other is this red shuttle. i took the red colored shuttle service... it sucked. i bet both shuttles probably suck, but i am gonna try super shtutle this time.

I'm flying down too, and was planning to take the bus. I'll be a little late (arrive a little before 9 I think) but oh well. It's only $0.40. Hopefully it's on time.

Current UCLA students: is the big blue bus usually on time?

super shuttle >>>> prime time shuttle (the red one)
should take 30 mins or less from airport to UCLA. always depends on if the shuttle is only taking people to UCLA, or other places as well.
costs $15 plus driver tip (usually $2 or $3)

the bus- people generally don't recommend doing that. my experiences with buses have proved them slooooooooooow around here, so unless you don't mind... ;)
altho, i haven't tried the bus to LAX myself, so you never know.

havent tried that new LAWA shuttle, but just to let you know, lot 32 is kind of far from the dorms (maybe 15-20 min walk), especially when you will have luggage...

i guess its a tradeoff between more expensive super shuttle which will take you right to rieber court or cheaper LAWA shuttle and walking a bit...or even dirt cheap big blue bus which will take forever and a day, in addition to walking a bit.

I'll be flying down on the 8th for early arrival and plan on getting there around 5:30 I think? (don't remember the flight info)... and I think I'm taking the big blue bus =(

i've grown up here and i've NEVER had a big blue bus come on time
still it's a good bus
just give yourself a lot of wiggle room
[/quote]
well I don't have any wiggle room, flight arrives at 7:15 am..there goes my bus plan. I guess I can just take a cab. It should be about a 30 minute trip around that time on a Friday morning, right?

...you don't want to take a cab. it'll get you there the fastest but it'll be hella expensive!
i still think your best option is supershuttle. all you do is walk out of the baggage claim, follow sign to "shared ride vans" and get on board a super shuttle. you pay when you get to UCLA.

You do not need to arrive on time. It's really not a big deal...

In fact I would recommend missing the first couple of hours - this affords the advantage of being able to get your bruincard without waiting in line, for one.

So do you reco making an online RT reservation for Super Shuttle or just showing up outside of baggage and waiting, telling the driver where you're going and paying there?

you only need to make reservations for super shuttle when you're going TO the airport.
because there's always super shuttles waiting outside the terminals, and each is categorized by area (beverly hills/century city or santa monica, i think, are ours) so that they don't go all over hell's half acre driving people around.
you tell the person where you're headed and they put you in the appropriate van. you might drive around the terminals a couple of times until the van is mostly full, but if it's a busy day you'll be outta there quickly, then you pay when you get here to UCLA. they do take credit cards but i prefer to use cash, it's easier.
