As some of you know, Baltimore perenially ranks amongst the top 5 most dangerous cities in the US. Also, a year or so ago, a student was killed on campus or in housing owned by jhu. Also, a few weeks ago, a girls dorm room was broken into and she was sexually assaulted. JHU is a great school, but all this makes you wonder if its worth going. I know a few people who go there currently, and they tell me that there is noone on the streets around campus or on the campus itself at night. I really didnt imagine college life to be like this- I thought of a very open and outgoing atmosphere. JHU seems to be the opposite of this. I am a prospective student, and JHU is my dream school, but all of these things is making me reconsider. I was wondering if anyone else has given to thought to this, and what they have decided. Students who go there right now, has this had a huge effect on your experience? Anyone who is having the same issue as me in deciding whether or not I want to go there in light of this, what are your thoughts. Basically, I just want to see what other people think of this. Thanks.

Both of these events are recent. There hasn't been many of these in Hopkins' history. The murder was in a frat house outside of the campus. This recent assault was in one of the dorms(pretty shocking to all of us), it wasn't a break in but more of her dorm room door was unlocked and someone let this guy into the dorm building. You need a key card to enter the dorm building. There are police on patrol around each building, and JHU is adding more. The police are definetly more wary. These events have not really made us anymore cautious then we already are. Everyone is use to being in groups in general around here. People just don't walk alone at night. As long as you are cautious I wouldn't worry too much. JHU's academic reputation as well as its general atmosphere outshine whatever dangers there are in baltimore.

It really isn't dangerous as long as you don't leave the immediate vicinity. The part of campus that is deserted at night you'll never be crossing at night anyway since it doesn't lead anywhere. But, if you start to venture even a few blocks off campus at night heading to frat parties or to grab some food (though there isn't much of a need to go a few blocks off), or whatever else travel with a group. If you need to head a little further off, there are security shuttles that you can call that will pick you up and drop you officially within a 2 mile radius, though they will accomodate requests a little further off. I heard about one incident a few years ago where a girl got stuck in the middle of the night somewhere in Pennsylvania, couldn't get a cab, and there were no other transportation options at that time of night, and a security shuttle went and picked her up.

As far as Baltimore as a city goes though, it sucks. Inner Harbor is a typical tourist area that gets boring after 1 or 2 visits, and the rest of the city, though it does have a few charms/places to explore, really isn't that nice, and doesn't have the wealth of options you'd find at other major cities. You'll spend most of your social life on campus or in the immediate vicinity.

i spent a summer at jhu. it was pretty boring. but cool people. make friends with locals, that helps to ease the pain of ennui. they know how to have fun around there. campus food sucks. tear ass= terrace. but if you like to hang out in the library go ahead. n. charles street was dangerous at night. one world cafe was a nice vegetarian place to eat. charles village pub was where we ate most of the time. half off on appetizers every monday. yeah not a really nice college city. the dorms were pretty dirty and they steal your towels. nice work out center/gym though. have fun if you get in.
