Going to Solin

Well, I ended up getting into Solin Hall, it was num 15 (got 1760 on lottery) on my list :( ... Gone try it out, hopefully I'll like it, worst case I'll ask to transfer. Is there anyone else here going to Solin? And anyone who has lived there already - how much of a problem is the distance from campus?

wow..that's unfortunate that you got such a high number. That sucks for me because after my top 5 choices I randomly picked my choices..so =S. Hope I don't have to cook for myself; I'm going to burn the house down. Although I hear some people say Solin's pretty good. Isn't it a few metro stops away though?

yup....that's the main reason had it ranked low...man, early classes would suck...need to wake up an extra half hour earlier :(

i am number 2013 out of 2015....how unlucky can u get?...

they still havent found a place for me yet...solin is my last choice too.. 15th and 16th....

so i guess i will be joining u...i am not looking forward to it though...y the hell do they to have a rez 30 minutes from the campus...retards

the first thing i do when i get to McGill is break the stupid computer that assigns lottery numbers....

you never know, maybe someone from New or something cancels before someone from Solin does. Your luck might turn around.

I have not found out where I will be yet, unfortunately. Solin was one of my last choices, too, but just because there is no meal plan. Everyone who I've talked seems to love Solin; it seems pretty cool. Where do you guys live? It seems that you found out soon.

You just have to call the Residence Office...They'll tell you

I know two people who lived in Solin and they absolutely loved it. They went into it dreading the thought of being far from campus, but it gave them the opportunity to see more of Montreal than most other students. They eventually got into the habit of cooking their own meals and living a more independant lifestyle. They've also told me that the residence is an overall tight-knit community, which is great for making friends. I ranked Solin pretty low, but even if I do end up there, I'm sure it'll be an awesome experience.

why exactly is solin so great? isn't it like an apartment building kind of thing? someone enlighten me so that in case I get solin I won't feel so bad. I ranked solin and MORE low because I can't cook and because I really don't want to have to commute to school in the morning.

everyone i know who lived at solin loved it. a lot of the arts kids were there and somehow for the past two years it's been a very gay rez (it just happened to be like that i guess?).

it's not that long a metro ride from lionel groulx (and the building is right by the entrance) to either peel (management, west side of campus) or mcgill (middle and east campus). i'd say it's more like a 15 minute ride if not less, but budget 30 min to get to class..

more's actually really fun. i had friends in more and since rez food got real old really quickly (i lived in both upper and new, and upper rez/doug/rvc food kinda..sucks.), their kitchen was invaded by all their kitchen-less friends. and most of the mores have kitchen and common rooms by each other so it's a really cozy place to hang out etc.

I got into Solin - it was actually my first choice. The idea of having my own room/bathroom that I didn't have to share with a whole floor of people was very appealing. I also like cooking for myself, particularly because of being vegetarian. When I visited the campus some girl let me invade her apartment, and it was GORGEOUS. Spacious living room with huge windows, cute little kitchen, 3 separate bedrooms, and 2.5 bathrooms. Overall a really nice set-up. So, yeah, I'm sorry if Solin wasn't the experience you were hoping for :/ but from what I've seen the rooms are super nice. I've heard lots of stories of people who really didn't want Solin, but ended up loving it - so you never know!

davidsebastian i hope you mean by "gay rez" that it had a large GLBT population- which it did.

I got Solin single

that's exactly what i meant.... heh..we called the group of them "the solin boys" hehe. my friends and i would always bump into them at le parking or unity or sky etc... i didn't know how to phrase it haha

oh and solin's time to campus isn't bad...not to mention low rent...just get a metro pass to school...

it takes 15 min to walk from new rez to the management building, and 15 min from metro lionel groulx to metro peel....so...not that big a deal

Very good point there, if it takes same amount of time to walk to campus as a subway ride, and let's face it, all the on campus buildings are in very high demand. Solin single was #5 on my lsit, and I like the idea of having my own room and bathroom, but sharing a kitchen and apartment.

Solin was also my first choice, having lived away from home during highschool a meal plan isnt as great as it sounds, and atwater market is a block away for amazing fresh food. semi private bathrooms are also nice, and the time to get to class isnt even that bad, it probably takes the same amount of time as upper res or new res to get to the arts building... without that stupid hill. i'd rather sit on a metro than slide down an icy hill in -30 weather. last but not least, solin is the only residence with good parking. seeing as i'll be heading to the ski hills frequently, underground parking is a serious bonus. see you guys there.

ur bringing a car?? wow everyone's gonna wanna be your friend ;-)

the st. henri area is also having this whole urban revival/renewal so the area's getting nicer and nicer. and lol it's not that slippery from upper rez...well.....hmm.....if you walk in the right areas......with proper shoes...

I'm looking at a picture of the dorms there, and comparing them to dorms I have seen in the US (and I have seen a lot). Those rooms look really nice. Sucks to be 30 min away, but hey think of us HS students that have to wake up pre 7:30! Also, an excuse to eat out in Montreal and drive around Montreal doesn't sound too bad to me. I assume if you don't have a car you will use public trans.

Can someone tell me about the computer lab in Solin Hall?
I.e. the hours of its computer lab? The types of computer there? Can I hook my lap top up for internet access there?
