Going to UC but take CC classes?

I’m going to go to a UC either UCSC or UCI, but can I take classes at De Anza CC during summer to lighten some of my course load?

Would this also lessen the cost of college as well? Because I’m sort of confused, do UCs charge by quarter or by units?

I think it depends on the UC whether they are in a quarter system or units system, check with your college. I am also thinking of taking a CC class. It will lessen the burden of taking one extra class so that you can fill that spot up with some other class you want to take. I am guessing it should cost less because it is a CC class price versus a UC class price. If you are willing to take a class over summer, then go for it. Don't overdo it though, take some time to relax =]

cc charge classes by unit like $20/unit. UC's charge by term, so say you do fulltime at a UC which is around $6k. No matter if you take 12 or 15,18,21 etc units it will stay the same.

It is very cost beneficial to complete some GE courses at a jc, thats why many people that can't afford college go to a jc and transfer for their upperdivision work.

yes, you can lighten your load by taking gen ed courses at juco. But note, however, the juco grades will not be factored into your UC gpa.

Also check with the UC you're going to attend/are attending to find out if the credits are transferable or not. I've heard stories of where people take classes without confirming the credits and end up not being able to carry them over.

It's easy to find out whether a cc class transfers over to the specfic UC that you will be attending in the fall. Go to this site:

It shows official articulation agreements established between all California community colleges and all UC's.
