Going to Wisconsin-UIUC never responded

I was accepted at Wisconsin yesterday and I am excited to be going there. However, my first choice was clearly UIUC as I have hoped to attend there since junior high days. I do live closer to Wisconsin in far Northern Illinois, but in state would have been nice. I will work it out with loans etc...

What I don't understand is why UIUC has to be so cold and slow in their admissions office and process. I know, welcome to the real world. Any calls that I or my counselor made were always cold and we never received correct info. I was told I would have an answer by mid- January several times but did not. E-mails were sometimes returned, but not always. I have several classmates with lesser stats though different majors who got in early.

I applied in September and had decent stats I thought. 29 ACT, class rank of 11 out of 88, though in a strong class, as many AP's as possible, great extras, good essay. Don't get it, but I am a Badger now. Even if I get a late acceptance, my feelings toward the school have changed and I will not go.

Hope our basketball team does better against Illinois next time :)

Good luck to those accepted and anyone still in limbo. I know it's tough, but I do have faith that things work out as they are meant to be.

Bull

Just curious what the rush was to find out. The universal decision date is April 1, and the reply date to inform colleges of where you are going is May 1.

Fair question. I guess I went from thinking UIUC was my first choice and very excited to be there to losing the good feeling I had since this process began. The difference in the efforts of Wisconsin to attend there and UIUC were dramatic. I felt Wisconsin took an interest in me and actually received a call from the department head in my major. UIUC never made me feel very good and in fact, was short and rude more often than not. They have many other apps so they can do this I guess.

Realize I have time, but don't want to be at Illinois anymore.

UIUC is huge. Expecting personal attn. from their adcom is kinda dumb....

Congratulations. Tuition aside I think you are going to the better school. As a long-ago Madison alum, I think you will end up being glad that UIUC was slow. Good luck next year:)

Madison is a nice school, but don't get too attached to the impression that this place is free of anonymous, unresponsive bureaucracy. What Antarius said about UIUC is often true of Madison as well.

That's really fu*ked up man, you're going to end up having to pay nearly 3x the amount of tuition for two schools that are very simmilar. You should try contacting UI again.

this is an indication of how you will be treated the next four years. illinois is very cold and impersonal. i guess they figure their reputation is so good, they don't have to care! i think you've made a good choice!

No, I agree with the OP. I mean, he applied in September, and showed great interest in UIUC. It's UIUC's loss for not paying more attention to its genuinely interested applicants. Even big public universities give their decision by now with his application date.

I love Madison, and I'm probably attending! I'm out of state btw as well, so we'll both feel the tuition pain. : )

At least Madison has football and hockey (although hockey is in a swoon too) . Congrats although it would pain me a little to pay the extra $$$$.
What dept are you planning on?

I think picking a college is an emotional response and I don't have a problem with UIUC being dropped because of the negative feelings that have been generated. However, something is going to happen sometime in the future to equally upset you about Madison. Maybe you should at least wait until May 1 to absolutely pick your school. Between now and then, UIUC may be nicer and Madison may be less nice. Madison could turn out to be very uncaring about dorm assignments or something. There is some money involved.

I didn't expect to generate this much response, but I thank everyone for their valuable input. I will try to answer the questions generated.

I will be majoring in mathematics.

I do understand Madison is a big school also and I will encounter big school pains. However, thus far, my experience with UIUC has been frustrating and I know how they have treated me and even a school counselor so far. I know they have lot's of good people to choose from and I am just one more applicant.

The money is an issue and I have some work to do to make it work out.

I will wait until May 1st as time can show me something I did not think about, but I will not attend UIUC. If money becomes an issue, I will stay in state and attend Illinois Wesleyan University, which I have been accepted to. It is a small, very good school in Bloomington and they offered a package higher than what UIUC would cost, but substantially less than UW.

I am a humble person, but I truly believe I should have been accepted by now to UIUC. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what I think, does it? I know of so many with lesser class rank, ACT scores and even other lesser things who have all been accepted and I am not sure why I am still out. The only explanation is they chose a major which is easier to enter than I did. Why this has taken 4 1/2 months is beyond me.

Again, thanks for all the comments. Many good people on this site.

Maybe they didn't recieve you application or you didn't recieve they're reply due to a problem with the post office.

They have everything. I have asked several times to be sure. Thanks though.

Be sure to apply for the scholarships through the local UW alumni group near your hometown. It's often easier to get than school money.

I am sensing that you might be a little annoyed that they took so long because you think that it should have been an easy decision for them. How long they took probably doesn't have anything to do with you personally, but just how they do applications. After all, it really doesn't matter until April 1. I would caution you to not judge UIUC based on the admissions office. It is a one of the best national public university. The admissions office is the one part of the college that you will never have to deal with ever again. Still, a bad attitude towards UIUC would get you off on the wrong foot even if you did consider going there.
