Is there anyone one here planning to go to Xavier? My daughter is seriously considering them and I wanted to get other students' points of view, particularly those that have visited the campus. What did you think of it? If you're already a student, did you make the right choice? Any suggestions on where we should stay during our visit next month? Places we should see, etc?

I wish someone had posted to your question. i am in the same boat. D really thinks she likes Xavier, but I know nothing about it. She is praying for Syracuse, but her back up was Dayton and now she is thinking Xavier. We visited Dayton, and we loved it but a horrible storm came in so we headed home rather than going to see Xavier. I think the current basketball craze has her liking it. Please post if you heard anything elsewhere!

I visited Xavier the other week and I liked it a lot. I don't know how well its known around the country, but here in the midwest its got a solid reputation. Its a nice city campus in a nice part of Cincy. They're adding a nwq b-school building and another academic building as well as some shops and stuff that will be done by fall 2010. Its probably my first choice as a backup school since its not overly expensive and their merit aid looks pretty nice. Cincy is a very nice city as well, plenty to do, and UCinncinnati is close by so there is no shortage of off campus clubs or parties if you want to go off campus.
If you have specific questions, post and I can try to answer.

tonytet: have you been to Dayton and how do the compare? d has not been to Xavier, but she loved Dayton. On paper, we love Xavier also. She is in the sport management programs. We plan to get to Xavier this weekend. She is very laid back and felt very comfortable at Dayton. X gave her more money so she is leaning that way.

I am going to Xavier in the fall and i would absolutely recommend going there to anyone! I feel more at home there than at home! It is the perfect college with its mixture of its nationally renowned learning, big city nearby for internships and job offers and a top notch basketball team to cheer on in your down time! On top of all that they are expanding the campus and it will soon be one of the coolest campuses in the states! send me a private message with any questions about why I chose xavier and i’ll be sure to convince you it is the right choice!

I’ve visited both and I liked different parts about each of them.

Dayton:
I thought the buildings seemed a little nicer at Dayton. The rec center and dorms were really nice, and they said that they are renovating the dorms too. The lady talked about how the sports management program was one of the best in the country there. I also know a ton of people who go there, and I haven’t talked to one person that doesn’t love it. Also, they have the students run businesses, and one is worth 1.5 million dollars. (You don’t have to be a business student to be a part of this.) Also, the students invest their $10 million dollar endowment fund, so that’s pretty neat.

Xavier:
The buildings seemed nice here too, but not quite as nice as Dayton. It’s a lot smaller, like I think only 1000 per class (where as Dayton was about 7000 I think?). Cincinnati is definitely the more thriving area, whereas downtown Dayton seemed pretty dead. The basketball court was really cool, and they said that the students go crazy for the games, so that would be really fun to be a part of.

Overall, I would probably choose Dayton from the two, because I like the bigger school, and I’ve just heard so many positive things about this school. But really it just depends on what you’re looking for.

My son is deciding between Xavier and Elon. He intends to major in business. Both schools are a similar size and the cost is comparable. I am interested in any opinions on comparing and contrasting these two schools.

Thanks

jmcoop, can you tell me anything about Xavier’s art dept? Our junior D is very interested in art, and the combination of Jesuit, in a city and smaller sounds great to her and us. But, we haven’t visited yet, and would love any info. on their studio art department.

If anyone’s S or D is still in the decision process, I am a Xavier student. I only just found this website yesterday, but if I had known about it sooner, I would have gladly helped! I visited Dayton and Xavier when I was considering, and before I looked at Xavier I was absolutely set on UD.

Now, going into my senior year at XU, I do not regret for a minute my choice to go to XU. I absolutely love it, and it feels like a giant family.

Jmcoop, I wonder if I know you?

pcmtn, our art department is wonderful. I took a ceramics class, and I absolutely loved it as a non-major, though it was a class designed for majors. The facilities are excellent and the professors are awesome. It is a very “true” artistic environment within the art department and I know a bunch of art majors who absolutely love it!
