To current Emory students and those already in the biz school-I need your help! I have been accepted to and plan on transferring to Emory this spring with aspirations to enter Goizueta. I know the average GPA is a 3.6 and mine is currently a 3.4. Emory did not accept my accounting and statistics courses, so I will be taking many of the prereqs over this semester. If I do well in these courses do I still have a good shot? I already have over 60 hours and don't want to waste a semester @ Emory if I am rejected. Thanks for your input!

If you do about the same(I actually don’t think they would reject a 3.4 if you have the necessary pre-reqs) or better at Emory, you should get in. And what do you mean “waste” a semester at Emory. That seems to imply that taking classes in the college isn’t worth your time. I assure you it is worth the time. We aren’t only known for our B-school. Surely you have more interests than just business. If rejected, choose awesome courses for that semester, and then reapply. Just because it isn’t the B-School does not mean it is time wasted. I don’t see how one could waste time learning interesting subjects. It does not seem worth transferring and paying all of that money (this may be a failed assumption as you may indeed have scholarship or fin. aid) if you find that only a very small portion of the university is worth spending time with. However, admittedly this depends on your year. Will you be a sophomore when you arrive?

Oh and by the way, even if rejected, you may choose to take courses in the B-School. My friend(sophomore) who is a transfer did that this semester (2 courses in B-School). So even if you are rejected, and only interested in business it does not have to be wasted time. Simply take courses in the B-School, beat that generous curve, and reapply.

The b-school is where I want to be, and yes, I have transferred in a total of 60 credits, but many of those are considered “business electives” since I have to re-take many of my prereqs at Emory. When I say I don’t want to waste a semester at Emory, I am saying I don’t want to take 4 classes that I have already taken at a different school only to be denied. I could go to UGA where all of my previous classes would count, but I would much rather be at Emory.

what if you get rejected from the b-school and the nursing school??

Yes, while the b-school is where many want to be, the rest of the college is good to. Anyway, I don’t think you will be denied admission. I don’t know why Emory does not take the credit. I think it’s too full of it itself in the transfer credit realm, especially when it comes to b-school credits. I have another friend(not the same one I mentioned) who transferred into the b-school and had the same issue. With that said, Emory’s counterparts of the courses that you have already taken are not as challenging as would be implied by Emory’s refusal to equate the credit. In fact, when you get here, they may actually end up being about the same difficulty if not a tad easier (probably not material wise, but the soft curve will make it simpler). Given this, you will probably do extremely well in those courses. If you only have to take too, make sure to expose yourself to some of the more popular courses in the college. One I would recommend is the Arab-Israeli Conflict with Kenneth Stein or any of the religion courses. They are taught well and certainly not threatening to the gpa.

sorry, fail with spelling/grammar. Anyway, stop worrying, you’ll gain admission unless you come across extreme misfortune.

Thanks for the advice bernie, you have been a big help. It’s great to be given additional assurance, I’m a low risk kind of guy, so getting into GBS is a pretty big concern.
