Golden Admission Application- Colorado School of Mines

I’ve been interested in Colorado School of Mines and was ecstatic when I received the Golden Admission Application ( which waives the application fee, allows me to apply without essay, and include me for all scholarships). While my weighted GPA is very high (4.3) due to my heavy course load, but only a 3.5 unweighted GPA. I also took my SAT in the summer of my junior year with score of 1300 (650 Math; 650 English), but I hadn’t studied for it and was stressed because of my AP classes (The curve on it was also very harsh since the test was deemed “too easy”, causing me to lose a significant amount of points). With all this being said, is it advised that i should apply early with the Golden Admission application despite my low stats. I plan to take the SAT on the 25th (hopefully I can get a 1400+), but I’m not sure if I can update my scores in time before my decision. I called the school and asked, but they told me that the Golden application means that the school is interested in me, and I shouldn’t worry much. I’m also a California resident, with low income hoping to get as much financial aid as I can. Thank you!

I’m also involved in many extra curriculars like co-founding and becoming vice president of Future Engineers of America Club at my school, inovled in many sports/ clubs, etc. (Also forgot to mention I plan to major in Petroleum)

Also check the “Colleges” section … http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/colorado-school-mines/

I got it too and if I go I also hope to do Petroleum - same class as you. It’s a little funny because I’ve always wanted to do International Business/Relations, Econ, or Political Science, but now I guess I am looking at Engineering too.

I think a lot of students who score highly on standardized tests get the golden application (or whatever other colleges may call the same concept) - if you are really interested in Mines, it is a way for you to save the application fee. I would not expect that the golden application would indicate that you’d receive big scholarships - you still need to consider whether Mines is financially feasible for your family.

Mines application is free now for everyone.

Where did you find that it was free for everyone

I think the Golden application is available to anyone. I do not think Mines reads essays, they don’t have a large admissions staff to do that, but they may glance at them for five minutes or less . Admissions to Mines as well as merit scholarships is based on a formula.

At Mines, I think the top scholarship is $14,000 OOS based on SAT or ACT, and GPA. For the top scoring in state students Mines offers about half off, the in state tuition, as I remember, or a little less.

Merit scholarships both in state and out of state, are calculated using a formula in all Colorado public schools, to keep things fair.

There is only a few full rides inside the state of Colorado, the Boettcher is a full ride to any public or private college in Colorado, and is given to only 40 students state wide. It includes room, board, tuition and networking options. It can be used at Colorado State, Mines, CU, DU, or Colorado College, or any of the smaller colleges, both public and private.

At CU Boulder, essays are read, and count for admissions to most programs, including College of Engineering, Leeds School of Business, and the Journalism/Media College, as well as Arts and Sciences too.

Though optional does anyone recall the topic(s) for the personal essay(s)?

I recieved the Golden Admission Application however, my weighted gpa is 3.8 and unweighted is 3.2. I have taken honors my first two years of high schoool and now I’m taking concurrent enrollment courses through a community college (I got told School of Mines will focus on my college classes rather than my testing scores but, I’m not sure if that’s all true). I took my ACT and got a 26 which places me in 82nd percentile. I plan on taking my ACT again in a month in hopes of increasing my score. However, I got told I should leave my score as it is since the Golden Admission Application is prestigious and means the school is inerested in me. Should I retake my ACT again to increase my score or should I just leave it as it is? Also, does everyone recieve the Golden Admission Application? Thank you!
