Hi all, my son has routinely had his ACT/SAT test scores sent to UMTC and so we’ve received a couple of emails back in May and June which stated the following:
“Later this summer you will receive an invitation to apply for admission to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with the Golden Gopher Application. Because we know you will be busy during your senior year, the application will be personalized to save you time. And when you submit your application, you’ll be automatically considered for scholarships and for admission to the University Honors Program.”
I know that these are simply promotional emails and are not any indication of how competitive an applicant for admission he will be to CLA. However, given the fact that the Fall 2016 admissions application is now online, I have a couple of questions: (1) based on prior admission cycles, does anyone know when the pre-filled Golden Gopher application is disseminated?; and (2) based on a simple Google search for the term “Golden Gopher application” I learned that in prior years recipients of the application link did not have to pay an app fee; however, there was no reference to not having an application fee in the emails. Does anyone have any insight as to whether I’d have to pay the fee?
My son got the 'look for the Golden Gopher application" thing too, but we are from MN. I think the app fee is only waived for OOS. At least this is what I remember as to why he applied in July instead of waiting for the Golden Gopher application. The application is very simple and only takes a few minutes to fill out - so I don’t think the GG app could save that much time.
Also every application is automatically considered for Honors and Scholarships - admission and Honors and Scholarships are stats-driven. So the I think the biggest reason to wait for the GG is if you are OOS and would have to pay a fee otherwise. HOpefully someone will chime in if I’m mis-remembering the fee part.
We are in-state. Last year D was invited to apply via the GG application but no fee waiver. The only fee waivers I recall from last year were OOS applicants.
D didn’t receive her GG application until at least mid-August last year so they are probably still sending them out. However, to get him on the grid perhaps you can send in his ACT score or call admissions and let them know you actually have two students with ACT’s of 30+ who are interested in applying and you were wondering if it’s possible to have a GG application sent to your son. There is no way they are going to ignore a 32 ACT. And they certainly price their tuition as if they wish to attract more OOS students so waiving the application fee should be a piece of cake
Mamelot - Thanks for the advice. I called admissions and was told that they waive application fee for non in-state/reciprocity students for either GG or regular application. For regular application, you need to call the admission counselor for your region first. Your advice/counsel has been very helpful!!
Like @fatherof2boys our DS also received the Golden Gopher app…
We are in-state, and were told by our recruiter that in-state kids don’t get a waiver… but we looked at it, and logged out without it being completed.
He got a second email with login information and that second email says that the application fee is waived. Not sure what the deal is yet, since he’s still a few steps from completing the application… will give the details when he does finally fill the thing out.
D2 received the GG application yesterday and her login and password today but it says nothing about a fee waiver. She’s in-state. D1 didn’t get a fee-waiver last year so I would have been shocked to see one now.
Last June or something I received a letter in the mail about looking out for the Golden Gopher application, but I haven’t received it yet and I’m a little worried. Am I the only one?
@dragonfly26 I wouldn’t worry too much. My D1 didn’t get anything till near the end of Aug. last year. If you are OOS you can ask them to waive the fee by contacting your admissions rep. The GG application is a nice touch but more than anything else it’s an indication of whether your info. is already in their system (which is probably the case for you given that they were already sending you e-mails).
When we logged in we noticed that they already had a LOT of info. on D2 so I’m trying to figure out where they got it. She’s never even expressed interest in UMN!
