Hi guys, I've read all about IB and the ultra-competitive nature of landing these jobs/internships. Unfortunately I did not get in to any target schools and have decided to attend my states flagship uni - Ohio State - in the fall. I will be a finance major, and I know attending OSU essentially makes it impossible to go into IB. I'm wondering, could I still get a job in one of their other departments (e.g. Wealth Management) coming from here? My main interest is finance, not necessarily IB, so it's not my goal to transfer to IB or anything like that, I've just always wanted to work for GS. Is it possible?b

Its definitely possible but coming from a non-target school, it is significantly more difficult. If you are really that focused for GS, start early and reach out to folks in the industry. Even more specifically, do a search of OSU alumni that are working in the industry or even better, at GS. I'm guessing you're young so you have time. In this case, be proactive and strike up a conversation without being too pushy. Alumni are usually responsive to current students. These are the type of relationships that will help you down the line.

Good luck.

The problem with wealth management, IMO, is you really need to have gone to a target school for the connections unless you are otherwise very well connected in affluent communities. You need to build a client base and for high net worth folks this doesn't happen with cold calls.
