I have to live here next year and don't know anything about the place except that it's horrible. If you know anything about this place please tell me about it. I really hate that I have to live here next year. It probably looks horrible and worn down and stuff.

Move to Lambeth. Or move off-grounds. Gooch/Dillard is one of those places that people try really hard to make positives about, but there are no positives. It's lonely, isolated, and I don't know ANYONE who likes it. Sure, lack of a roommate is somewhat nice. But trust me, you'll be lonely even with a suite and no one outside of Gooch/Dillard will ever visit you. I haven't visited 3 of my friends who were unfortunately placed there as transfers.

Cav, you can chime in

If the housing decision for a six person suite came down to a choice between Lambeth Field Apartments and Bice House Apartments, which would you folks prefer, and why? All second year students, evenly split between the College and the E School. Also, does anyone still refer to the E School as the "Tool School"? That was a popular nickname for the Engineering School in days gone by, but that was a number of years ago. Actually, many years ago.

Lambeth: more people, more social, more second-years, more fun.

And no, it's just the e-school really. Or the nerds. Or "you guys hate life I bet".

Wishfullthinking, there's a really good chance you'll be able to find off-Grounds housing if you look around hard enough. People will be moving around and there will be a period before things get settled and you might have a chance to get into another place. There are some really inexpensive options down Wertland St., if you like the live on the edge a little bit......haha. You also might still be able to get a slot in Lambeth--a good friend of mine moved into Lambeth (from Hereford!) just days before school started.

If you can't get out of it, look at it as a bonding experience. You'll probably become very close with your suite, and who knows? You could end meeting your best friends there! It'll just be a bit more of a challenge getting out to frats and parties and whatnot.

HopefulHoo'sDad, I would say Lambeth. But both are pretty good options.

I live in Gooch/Dillard right now and I really like it. Yes, the rooms are small, but you don't have a roommate and they feel very cozy as long as you don't have a ton of stuff. I live with a group of my friends, and we actually use our common room, so I never feel isolated. Since they are putting down the new roof this year, you will not have to deal with it next year.

As far as I can tell there are alot of engineering students, which is great if you are in the E-School and need some help every now and then. The dorms are also very close to Runk, which is the dining hall I like best because it is not crowed and the staff are nice. The dorm are also close to class and the gyms.

I was worried about living in Gooch/Dillard too. Its really what you make it. I like with a group of friends and feel like I have plenty of space in my room.

We toured Gooch/Dillard over Family Weekend and thought it was fairly nice. The rooms were small, but private. The location seemed okay, especially if you were in the College and had a lot of your classes in Gilmer or the Chem building, or if you were in the E-School. And it offered a convenient choice of Dining Halls (Runk or O-Hill). Close to a bus stop as well. All things being considered, it didn't seem too bad.

HoosDad -- Gooch/Dillard is dark, kinda up in the woods, and a fair hike from Cabell and terrible distance from the A-school. Its decently close to the e-school, but other than that its out of the way.

The dining halls its close to don't really matter too much because most people after first year don't eat at the dining halls (they aren't what you'd call 'great food') and take advantage of the kitchens in their on-campus suites (All the upperclassmen ones have them... I think) whether it be serious cooking or just heating up frozen food. The people that keep dining plans do so just for lunches on grounds -- I can't think of anyone in Bice, Lambeth, etc that actually goes to the dining hall for dinners. Its just too far of a walk for not so good food. Plus, if you divide out the cost per semester and the number of meals on each plan, you can see that you can actually save money cooking yourself. I can eat lunch on the corner for much less than one of the meals at the dining hall costs -- bodos, little johns, christians are all fattening yummy cheap food.

The biggest disadvantage with Gooch, is although it doesn't seem that fair from stuff -- it is out of the way for people to come visit you. Considering how many people move off grounds to the 14th St and Corner area after 1st year, its a real hike to get back to Gooch. Its far from most parties and bars and if you go out, very few people would want to walk back with you because of the distance, so you're going to yellowcab it from the corner a lot just to be safe.

Wishful- Of course, you might be placed in a suite of transfers in a similar situation as yourself and it could turn out to be a wonderful experience. I would say give it a semester, and if it totally blows find a way to move into Lambeth or Bice. There are usually some openings there by second semester, housing just doesn't speak of them unless you strongly ask.
