School doesn’t offer AP. I want to get into a top tier college. Here is my potential schedule:
History(No Options)
Honors Alg II/Trig ( Supposed to be in Geo. Honors)
Bio I Honors ( Should I Skip?)
Eng. I Honors
Latin I (Heard it’s good for med school)
Project Lead the Way (Prin. of Biomed. Science)
Exploring Art (Fine Art Credit)
Your schedule looks good, I wouldn’t skip bio in the 9th grade, and I’d figure out outside ways to do AP level courses (summer programs, etc.)
Thanks and do you mind sharing the “other ways” you did AP level courses. I would be very interested in them.
Don’t skip bio. You can pay to take APs online.
True, but is only of use if your school does not offer the class. It will in no way be beneficial for college admissions. Your schedule is fine as is. And no, you should not skip bio.
@skieurope yes I was just referring to the OP’s comment above me asking “what other ways”. I agree with you though.
I was planning to take Chem I maybe after skipping Bio 1.
I might not do that anymore.
Isn’t bio a pre-req for chem at your school? I would not skip bio.
Well skipping it would be getting the credits, so I’d have to take a test to skip it.
What history are you taking? LOL. Is it world, American, civics?
Well, you need a good background of biology to learn stuff for other sciences. How can you take a test to skip it?
American History
and I could take the Bio I course over summer.
Taking Bio over the summer is a good option, you’ll learn the information which you wont do by skipping and you can take a more advanced class freshman year
I second what 17Angel said - regardless of what you decide to do, definitely don’t skip Bio. If you take Biology over the summer, that would be much better than just skipping to Chem.
I would never skip. I guess I worded it wrong. I meant like do it over the summer and then take the test and “skip” the class.
Take bio over the summer Do it at a community college, and start on honors chem your freshman year! I am planning on taking chem over the summer, but I wished I skipped bio. It’s an extremely class, and you should definitely take it over the summer, if you have time.
If you can take bio over the summer and take Chem in the Fall, it’s a good solution - and if Summer Bio doesn’t go well, you can still take Bio in the Fall.
Foreign language: Latin doesn’t really “help” for med school. It helps with memorizing some vocabulary but it’s derived vocabulary and you’ll have many more memnotechnics anyway.
Don’t learn Latin because of something you might do 8 or 10 years from now.
Learn Latin because you’re fascinated with the way people lived 2,000 years ago in Rome, Britain, or Syria, because you want to read classical speeches and poetry, because you want to “get” all those references in your British literature and art history classes, perhaps because learning how to find your way around a town or reading teen magazines from Belize, France, Brazil, etc… isn’t your cup of tea.
What WILL help is either a language spoken by immigrant communities (can be Spanish, French-> Creole, Russian, Somali, Urdu…) that you can continue up to a decent level past the basic college graduation requirement or a language that’s easy and that you can keep working on (in terms of difficulty, I’d say, from easiest to hardest: Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Latin, German, Russian, Chinese).
Okay, so I will do Bio over summer. My school doesn’t offer anything besides Spanish, Latin, German, French(Unless they have some online courses, which I doubt). I’m going to take Latin I. If I take Chem in Freshman fall should I take Physics in 10th grade. The pre-reqs for Physics are Geometry and Chem I. I’ve already done Geometry and by end of 9th grade Chem would be done. So is taking Physics I a good idea in 10th grade.
