I'm happy with my ACT score of 35... but I only received an 8/12 on my writing! Will this greatly affect my chances at college admissions--should I retake the ACT because of the writing score?

Please advise!

I doubt it.

And that means I don’t have to fret about this? :-/ idk at this point!

My D had the same scores. She decided not to retake, and was admitted to Pomona ED. No regrets here!

Okay that makes me feel a little better. what if I was aiming for UChicago and WashU?

I don’t know about Chicago, but WashU does not require or consider the writing score unless it helps your overall score (which, in your case, it doesn’t). I know because I had the same problem and a very similar score. A 35 is very good – congratulations! Smile (:

You think an 8 is BAD? I got a 7 and got into my top choice (although it was Caltech…)

But seriously, an 8 isn’t really that bad. Colleges know that a 25 minute essay doesn’t reflect much on your part.

Thanks guys, you’re making me feel better. :)

Yup. Overall, it shouldn’t be a problem at all. Some 2400 SAT scorers have even ended up with 9 essays on a scale of 12 - but after all, a 2400 SAT is still a 2400 SAT, just like your 35 ACT is still a 35 ACT ;)

WashU flew my D out for a recruiting weekend (see scores above). If you’re a junior, be sure to watch your mail and return the WashU scholarship interest form. I’m pretty sure that’s what got her the invitation.

I would think you’re fine for Chicago too, assuming all the rest of your application is good. What they really want to see in terms of writing is how you do on their quirky essays.
