Thanks so much!!!! That was helpful!!!!!

I haven't read much about that program on this forum. As a californian it would be nice to have this as a safe option if the program was decent.

Jacksdad,

I once looked into Chico State when doing a search of MT options for a CA student and I wanted BA safety schools (that is relative to each student of course). Chico State is one BA school that indeed offers a MT program, and there are not too many of those (though I have found several). This one has no required audition, making it less competitive in that regard.

Here is a teensy little bit I have for you in my notes:

Cal State – Chico: BA MT, BA Theater Arts, Minors in Theater Arts or MT Dance: Chico, CA, rural campus, 14,000 undergrads, accepts 80%, 1% come of out of state, Avg. GPA 3.3, 35% from top 10% of class, 76% from top 25%, 100% from top half, mid SATs V 460—560, M 480-480, Combined 940-1140, Offers a BA in Theater Arts or a BA in Musical Theater. Minors available in Theater Arts or Musical Theater Dance. Puts on 8 annual productions including musicals.

Have you looked at Santa Clara University? It also is a BA with no audition in CA. It is not as easy to get into academically as Cal State Chico but I know nothing about your D's stats.

Santa Clara offers: BA Theater Arts, Dance Minor, Interdisciplinary Major/Minor in MT

How is Santa Clara's theatre program? My D is very interested in the school. How does it stack up compared to LMU or Chapman, for example?

I don't know LMU.

As far as how Santa Clara stacks up to Chapman, I can't say in terms of "quality" but there are other differences. Chapman is a BFA Theater Performance program with an audition after the second or third year to get in and they also have a BA by audition. These are in Theater, not MT.

Santa Clara has no audition to get in. If you are going the BA route, there will be no BFA students at the school in "competition" for casting, etc. Further, if you want MT, Santa Clara has an Interdisciplinary Major or Minor in MT, as well as a Dance Minor. So, for someone wanting MT more than straight theater, that is a difference. However, Chapman does have courses in musical theater and dance in their program, just not a MT major per se. They have a few MT opportunities and more than some other straight theater programs might. Chapman puts on 3 main productions plus smaller productions every semester. Every fall, they do a Broadway MT Revue. I don't know if they put on regular musicals. There is a London Theater Tour course available over interterm. Santa Clara puts on some musicals, and this year's seems to be a Broadway Cabaret type of one.

Also, the locations differ, naturally. Academically speaking, they seem on par in terms of admit rates (to the university) and stat ranges.

I have never been to either school and so it would help to talk to those who know these schools much better.
