I've got a good, but not great GPA(3.8 weighted), but i do have very high SAT's ( cr:760 M:700 wr:740) and a really strong extra curricular record(no padding).I want to know: Do they look more hollisticly at UVA or are they more interested on the number and class rank?

class rank and GPA are number 1 for uva

Well, I would disagree. Are you in-state? I'd say your chances were good with those numbers.

Even OOS, they will consdier strength of schedule, geographic diversity, and other intangibles. All is not lost!

Good luck, RB

will it matter if my gpa isnt sky high, but I'm in the top 15% of my class? I would think the two would cancell each other out, but I'm not sure.

UVa generally wants to see a rank in the top 10%. So top 15% to them will most likely not cancel out a lower GPA

I'll be in the top 10 % next smester, so I guess if i don't get in early admish. , I still have a shot

Did you take the toughest courses offered by your high school? That makes a difference--sometimes avoiding a fourth AP course can make you look like someone who avoids a challenge.

I assume you're out of state. Are there many from your HS who go to UVa? Sometimes, if you're the first one to go to UVa from your home town, it makes you look more attractive.

I'm instate
last year I took 3 ap last year, 1 my sophmore year and this year I'm taking 4. I've taken the most advanced history and english my school offers and havce recieved A's in all those classes. I've also taken Ap spanish. I've recieved all 5's on my ap exams so far

It really depends on your school. A top 25% class rank and 3.5 GPA at some schools is considered excellent. At other schools, a 3.8 GPA and top 5% rank means almost nothing. Do many of your students go to elite universities? I mean, given your AP results (all 5s) and your SAT scores, it seems that you go to a very tough school.

Alexandre, While you have a good point, according to the UVa common data set 84% of students were in the top 10% of their high school class. When you consider that athletes account for a considerable number of those not in the top 10% that raises the percentage of "normal" students in the top 10% even higher.

HH, I would think you're very likely to get accepted. You have a nice GPA and SATs, and you're in state. I know many in state students who got in to UVa with similar or lower scores. My S had lower SATs and class rank than you, and he's doing fine at UVa. There are lots of "good but not great" students at UVa.

As for class rank, I believe that it is a derivative statistic, and not a deciding factor.

Be sure your package is complete: extracurriculars, essays, teacher recommendations, etc. You're very likely to end up in C'ville next year, in my opinion.

Good luck!
RB

I've made sure i've got golden recommendations(tip for anyone reading this: Make a VERY detailed resume for your recommender), and I'm fortunate enough to haveno padding in my extra curricular list. I hope you're right, red beard. thanx

I agree with redbeard. The reason why 90% of students at elite universities (like UVA) graduate in the top 10% of their class is because most students attend large public schools where being in the top 10% is not that difficult. But at some schools (like Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia for example), being ranked in the top 10% is not necessary to get into an elite university. Like I said, given your 5s on the APs and your excellent SAT score, I think it is pretty clear you are going to a very good high school and taking a very challenging course load. I would say UVA is a safe match for you.
