I plan on majoring in Comp Sci and living in California afterwards. I definitely can't get into Stanford and CalTech. I was really gunning for UCLA or Berkeley, but even if I was fortunate enough to get in I wouldn't be able to pay the high oos tuition. I was wondering if there were any cheaper Cal colleges that still have excellent Comp Sci programs? (Also social life is a really important factor)

Cal Poly SLO is considered excellent and much lower price, it is considered quite highly for CS and placement is said to be excellent. Other ones with good reputations in that area are Cal Poly Pomona, San Jose State and Cal State Chico. For social life Cal Poly SLO and Chico are more traditional college communities and the other CSU’s are semi commuter schools.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and San Jose State University are probably the top CS choices in the lower priced CSU system. CPSLO is primarily a residential school; SJSU is probably about half residential and about half commuter. SJSU’s location in Silicon Valley makes it a good place to get recruited. CPSLO is the most selective of the CSUs, but note that CS is one of SJSU’s most popular majors, so that it has recently been having a high admission threshold: http://info.sjsu.edu/static/admission/impaction.html

Thanks for the replies! I was planning on applying to Cornell ED, but now I’m thinking about Cal Poly SLO!
