So, I have a little bit of a crush on one of my professors.

That probably isn't very important, but I felt it was worth mentioning. I think it's the reason why I'm so conflicted over this, but whatever... digressing.

Anyway, this guy is totally and completely brilliant, hilarious, very clear and helpful, and certainly easy to look at. All of it combines to make him a wonderful lecturer and an overall fantastic professor. This semester, I'm taking a class with him that is supposed to be the most difficult and boring requirement in my major, but because he teaches it so well, it has become my favorite class. To top it off, I'm doing very well in it.

I have to take two courses of a certain level to fulfill a requirement for one of my concentrations. There are about ten options for this class, all of which have different themes, but the same general idea. This particular prof is teaching a class on this level next semester, and that is very rare, but the course he is teaching sounds sinfully boring in its description. There are other classes that sound as if they are more in my general range of interest, but I'm not familiar with those professors. This department (especially with its "fun" classes) is pretty hit and miss with its teachers. I'm taking a "fun" course now that I hate because the professor is ridiculous.

So, do I take the class that I have absolutely no interest in (yet) solely because of who is teaching it? Or do I take a class that seems like it will be interesting and run the risk of having a dud professor? I feel like it's turned into an ethical issue becuse I'm attracted to the guy. I would feel flighty and shallow for registering for a course with him because of it. Then again, I know that if I took it, I'd probably develop an interest in the subject material, and I don't know... broaden my horizons or something. But yeah **hot/b prof, or good class? Feel free to debate/offer advice/insult my intelligence, what have you.

In my experience at least, a bad professor changes everything and makes me end up hating the subject matter at the end of the semester. I’d just go with the first guy, whatever your reasons are for liking him. It’s not unhealthy unless you actively pursue a relationship with him.

For me, so far, any prof who’s been able to keep to the syllabus has been good. Those who stray from it and have unstructured classes destroy your life (and grades)… especially since I’m the sort to skip a lot of classes :p

Hey…I was actually just talking to one of my mentors about this who was saying you take classes for who teaches them, not based on the class name or description. I completely agree. I see it this way…You are paying however much to be enrolled in that one class. If you just bought the book and read it yourself, it would be a small fraction of the price. The value added is the professor. I’d suggest before deciding, to find out who is teaching the other classes as well and looking them up on resources like ratemyprofessor or by asking others at your school. Then you can make an accurate decision. In the end though, the only 2 reasons to take ANY class is 1. if the professor is great, or 2. if it’s really easy. Hope this helps

If you like the teacher, you’ll like the class.
I say go for it. It’s good to learn something new.
I loved Drama but had a horrible teacher, and that ruined my desire to audition for advanced acting.

Definitely good teacher over bad teacher. If the teacher sucks, the class will just SUCK more. I’m taking Biology and the professor is horrible. I never want to study for it because she is so boring and disorganized.

Take the good teacher; you’re not paying tuition to learn from the worst and come out hating the subject. Plus, if you like him, you have incentive to go to class.

In my experience, ALWAYS go for good professor. No matter how boring and crappy the subject matter is, if you KNOW you really like the professor, that’s it.

A professor can RUIN a good class. I’ve had it happen to me before. Something I was uber interested turned to absolute mush because of the professor. I stopped going to class and made an A because it is something I am naturally interested in.

I’m taking a class that is outside my major. If it was any other professor, I would have dropped it like a bomb because the material is relatively boring (I can see how people are interested in it, but if you are not doing it for your career, you do not care). The professor is the ONLY reason I attend class and wake up at 9am every other day. The ONLY reason and it is SOOO worth it.

You could go that route, but I do not recommend it.

Good teacher- I wasn’t really looking forward to one of my classes last year, but I had a hilarious (and super hot) professor. I ended up loving it and making an A in the class, even though I started out with an attitude.
