I'm going to be a math major student .. pure, pure math .
(something that most people find useless.. )

Well I was wondering if there is any specific college that has an awesome mathematic program. Do you guys know any?

Well I was wondering if there is any specific college that has an awesome mathematic program. Do you guys know any?

Most mathematicians would say that Harvard, Princeton, Chicago, Berkeley, and MIT have the best math departments. I'm currently an undergraduate math major at the University of Chicago, so that's the only school I really know about. The math program at Chicago emphasizes algebra, analysis, and topology, the three "mainstream" fields in math. If you're interested in another field, like logic or discrete math, I would still recommend Chicago because the program builds a strong foundation for further study in math.

When I think math, I think Berkeley and Princeton.

The NRC ranking and the Gourman ranking are virtually the same for math. So the very best would probably be:

Berkeley
Princeton
Harvard
MIT
U Chicago
Stanford
Yale
NYU
Michigan Ann Arbor
Columbia
Caltech
UCLA

In any order:

Harvard
MIT
Berkeley
Stanford
Princeton
Caltech

gap-

Yale/Michigan/Columbia/Chicago/NYU

Chicago, Princeton, Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, CalTEch.

For "pure, pure math" I would say Chicago or perhaps Princeton are obvious choices. You could probably find theoretical math at any of the top schools, though - for example, MIT's theoretical math track in the math major.

powergrid doesn't know what he's talking about. There's hardly a gap between, say, Princeton and Michigan, and there's no way Stanford and Caltech are better than Chicago in math. Chicago has one of the most influential math departments in the world.

Agreed....

If you're looking for a safety, the University of Missouri-Rolla is a math/science school.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that my list was just based on my personal preference/opinion.
