Magenta- please read momrath’s post very carefully. Anything I would have said, she said better. Pause and get the finances cleared with your parents. Great advice there. Follow it and you’ll be better off for it. Good luck!

I agree with some of the previous people. You do have great scores and an awesome GPA but you may be lacking in the ECs. My uncle is an admissions officer and he tells me that when he reads essays and supplements, he looks to see a story of how kids have changed throughout their four years of high school through their ECs. Their ECs should define what type of person they are and how it’s changed their personality as well.

Scores may not be enough to get into those reaches. You should look into some of the UCs as well for targets or safeties.

SUNY Binghamton, UMich, UVA, USC, NYU, BC, Vandy, Duke, UChicago, Penn, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, WUSTL

Is this a bad list? I’m looking at schools with good business/econ.

Yes, SUNY Binghamton should be a safety for you. You might want to look further for another safety though, one that you would be happy to attend. This thread may be helpful:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/881237-ivy-caliber-safeties-matches-condensed-advice.html

Definitely take advantage of EA wherever it is offered. An early acceptance is the best kind of safety, and lets you concentrate on reaches. (And an EA rejection lets you know that you need to apply to more match and safety schools.)

Some of the schools that sound like matches that you list are not good with financial aid, so may not be affordable for you.

Would you consider LACs? All LACs will offer Econ, and some have business. As as Asian male, you would be a URM at LACs, and many of the highly ranked LACs have excellent financial aid. For example, U. Richmond has a highly ranked undergrad business school and meets full need.

Might look at Holy Cross very good LAC with strong alumni network rin the business community and on Wall Street. Holy Cross alums score very high on Payscale salary study. HC is need-blind for financial aid and is considered as one of the better Jesuit schools.(BC is also a Jesuit school).

@sacchi

Would Swarthmore be a match for me? Or it would be like a low reach type deal or just a reach in general? I would be fine with going to a LAC as long as their business/econ is relatively strong.

Swarthmore is not a match for anyone

I figured.

Swarthmore claims that they look at applications based on the applicant’s life circumstances as well. Do you think this would benefit me since I need to spend so much time at the family business?

Agree with barrk123, Swarthmore is a reach for everyone. Still, it is worth applying if you are interested in it.

Swat is clearly aiming to keep balanced male/female, since the male acceptance rate is 18% vs female acc rate 13%.

[College Navigator - Swarthmore College](<a href=“College Navigator - Swarthmore College”>College Navigator - Swarthmore College)

^ There are plenty of strong LACs that would be matches or safeties for you, but you’ll have to pick ones that are less selective than Swarthmore. Look for 30% or higher acceptance rates to get an idea of the range.

two more for your mix …haverford college and muhlenberg college
you should always check freshman retention rate! it is a great sign of student hapiness (IMO) it should be in the high 80’s although 90% and higher is even better!

sacchi do you know any LACs with fairly strong econ/business majors that would be matches/safeties for me?

Holy Cross and Colgate are very strong in business community with strong alumni networks. Holy Cross has a very good Wall Street alumni network as does Colgate.

LAC safeties for business/econ: Babson, Bentley

Thank you momrath, I will look into that.

In terms of Colgate, would that be a match/safety?

Colgate would be a high end match. I believe Holy Cross would be a safety.

Colgate is ranked 21 an Holy Cross is ranked 29, not that big of a diff.

I have a hard time with matches as it’s difficult to categorize them accurately at all times for all people. My suggestion is to have a few obvious reaches and at least one (preferably two) surebet safties. The middle can fall where it likes – reachy match or matchy safety.

Yeah… that’s why I try to ask people to classify colleges for me. I never really know whether to consider it a match/reach/safety.

Thanks momrath.

BTW, if anyone has any suggestions, I’m still open :D

Colgate as a match. Doesn’t have a business school, but good placement.

U. Richmond as a safety, with a highly ranked undergrad business school. (#15 by Business Week, one of the few LACs on the list.)
