Good colleges for History

I'm really interested in history and hope to major in history when I attend college. Do you know of any colleges with good history departments?

Concentrations I'm thinking about: Modern Studies and Urban History

Most colleges have at least serviceable history departments.

I’d develop a large list of schools that interest you for other reasons - location, cost, size, “feel”, etc. - then cut the list down by looking at the websites and seeing which offer a broad range of courses in the areas of history you find interesting.

Would you like to go to a big school or small school? Where in the country do you want to go?

I would like to go to a college in an urban area or suburb on the east coast.

Mostly a small or medium size school.

History is, unlike Celtic Languages or something, a department that every single one of the top 300 schools in America should be serviceable in. (Although some are more closely focused than others; William and Mary, for example, has a very America/early-America-focussed history department.) Annasdad has the right tactic. Although your area and size preferences are helpful, they’re not nearly as helpful as knowing about what your test scores and GPA are, or how much aid you’re going to need. If you’re 3.5+ UW, 2000 or 2100+ SAT, and your parents have a lot of money socked away for college, you’re looking at pretty much the USNWR top 100 universities/LACs. If that’s the case, I’m not sure how much more help we can be knowing you want to major in history than not knowing that. If your scores are not so good or you need a lot of merit aid, so you’re looking for a college that has a fairly strong department in history given its admissions standards, this website might be able to be more helpful.

Well, right now my gpa is 3.95 unweighted and 4.34 weighted. I took the PSAT and didn’t do so well (1445). I also took the PLAN test and my composite score was 23. As you can see, I don’t do so well with standardized testing. My family is middle class. The current school I go to is private and the only reason we can afford it is because I received a scholarship.

could afford
