I'm looking to transfer to a school and major in (preferably applied) math. what are some schools in the northeast (closer to pennsylvania) that have good math departments besides the obvious princeton, MIT, harvard? I should probably mention I'm interested in a LAC and smaller schools but I'm open to any suggestions. For instance how are Lafayette or Swarthmore's math departments?

I sat in on a DiffEq class at Swat. There were a whopping eight kids! The prof knew everyone’s name. The math department at Swat is, as far as I can tell, truly top-notch–probably the best of the LACs (well, in addition to Harvey Mudd, but that’s not near Pennsylvania). It also has a great engineering department, so Swat is not just about the humanities.

I know you prefer a LAC that has applied math, but NYU is a fairly large school that doesn’t have applied math undergrad but does have an applied focus to the general math degree. Have you ever heard of NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences? Look it up.

take a look at U Chicago.

Swarthmore has some very bright math majors. One of the peculiarities of the college/department is that most upper-level courses are taught as seminars: students learn the material on their own and present it to each other under the supervision of a professor, without lectures from the professor. Some consider it a great opportunity to become a more self-motivated and independent learner, while others think of it as an inconvenience.

On side note, the only applied math Swarthmore teaches is statistics.

I would suggest taking a look at Brown University (Providence, RI). The pure and applied math departments are both top notch. Also, it’s a pretty small school, very much like an LAC in many aspects. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/385841-brown-curriculum-university-college-explained.html has a great explanation of the “university-college” model. From what I can tell, seems like it could be a great fit for you. Good luck with college admissions!

I’m in the math department at swarthmore if you have any particular questions

I’m also a math major at Swarthmore. The math department is very good and the professors are very supportive.
