GOOD Computer Science schools?

Hello! I am a computer person from NYC. I know I want to major in computer science. I have been programming for the past two years. My question is can you recommend a good computer science school to me?
My stats:
GPA: 4.0+ (Weighted)(out of 4.0)
Rank : 7/391
SAT: 1970 ( Math 740/r: 590/w 640)
SAT II: chem: 780, math I: 660

Already applied to:
Columbia
Cornell
NYU -POLY
RIT
Stony Brook
Drexel

Considering:
G-tech (chance me please- only reason did not apply yet is the location)
UIUC
John Hopkins

Can you please recommend me some other good schools- I don't have much time so please?

Want to apply to more

When talking about computer science, you can not exclude Carnegie Mellon

I Know, but the problem is that it is too expensive for me and my school doesn’t offer 2 computer science courses that are required for cmu.

CMU doesn’t require any HS computer science classes. So could explain what you mean by that?
Other than the state schools, they are all pretty expensive. I’m guessing that means you ran the net price calculator and found out the CMU won’t give you as much FA as the others?
RPI?

MIT, Stanford, Caltech, UC Berkeley.

One of my friend who really wants to go their told me that they require that. So i guess i either miss-herd him or he ‘lied’. But anyways I don’t really like CMU.

What do you think about CS at Purdue?

Purdue would be good but as a public school where you would be OOS, your costs would be higher. Most publics are not generous with FA for OOS students, but I don’t know specifically about Purdue.
What is your unweighted GPA? What did you not like about CMU? What criteria are you looking for? - these answers will all help people make more concrete suggestions.

You can also try the College Search tool here on CC for some ideas. While it won’t tell you which schools are good specifically for CS, it does try to guess how likely you are to get in based on your GPA and test scores. [College Search - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/)
Be sure to expand the number of results at the top (20 by default) and be sure to select “must have” for any important criteria, otherwise it may come up with some odd matches. It represents the match as a percentage and when you click on the “why?” underneath the fit number it shows you how you compare and why.

Quite frankly the OP probably doesn’t have the stats required for CMU, so all the better that he doesn’t like it.

I wouldn’t be concerned about Georgia Tech’s location if you’re applying to other schools in major cities. Outside of Florida, Atlanta is the most “Northern” city in the Southeast region, and Georgia Tech has a very high OOS enrollment.

If you want a big urban school that’s not terribly difficult to get into, consider U Minnesota. Relatively cheap OOS price, and good comp sci offerings.

Lehigh, RPI. U. Rochester? Northeastern, BU, UMass Amherst.

Cost constraint?

Lower list price schools to consider are Minnesota, Virginia Tech, NCSU. But Stony Brook is a good bargain if you are a NY resident, and reasonably priced even for non-residents.

@beantowngirl unweighted GPA is 98. I am looking for a school with good research facilities for CS. CMU is just too expensive and I know i wont get a lot of scholarship because my stats are not that so good, I love CMU its just that it would be useless for me to apply their.

I applies to Northeastern, not doing BU becasue they are basically same in reputation and CS program.

UMass Amherst- is it overall a good school or is it just good for computer science?

**Ignore the grammatical errors

CS is the major with the best reputation at Massachusetts - Amherst. Most other subjects offered should be decent (though inspection of faculty interests and course offerings should certainly be done if specific subjects are a concern), but the school as a whole (like many other flagship state universities) suffers in overall reputation due to relatively low selectivity and the presence of many students with only moderate academic ability and motivation.

Massachusetts - Amherst is more expensive than some of the other out-of-state public schools mentioned in this thread, and obviously more expensive than in-state Stony Brook.

There are two tracks for computer science: academic and industry.

If you want to be an academic, it doesn’t matter all that much where you go for undergrad, as long as you excel. Any one of those schools would be fine.

If you want to work in industry, particularly in start-ups, then it matters immensely where you go. Your top choices should be: UIUC or UW, with Berkley being a reach. Unless the goal is to work for govt or in finance, all good comp sci people typically end up on the west coast.

What is your budget? How much will your family pay?

GT will likely be too expensive for you as well. It’s an OOS public. Same problem with UIUC and Purdue.

YOU can’t borrow much. You can only borrow $5500 as a frosh.

What are your financial safety schools? These are the schools that you know for sure that you’ll get accepted to, AND you know for SURE that you have all costs covered.

RPI
WPI
Case Western

I’d say UT- Austin but the application deadline has already passed.

@ducecy definately Industry. I already have my first company(site) in the works (epicbinder.com). My plan is to work for 3-4 years, get experience and than start my own company- possible sector: artificial intelligence in super conductive car (FUTURE TECH)- trains for now.

My financial safety is Stonybrook.

budget: around $20000

Currently NYU-Poly is my top choice, because I will probably get a lot of scholarship money. But their research facilities aren’t quite up to par, even though poly is working on developing the first 5g network-possibly by 2020.

Any schools in NJ except stevens, rutgers and Princeton?

Your M+CR is a 1330. Why do you think you’ll get a lot of scholarship money from NYU Poly? It looks like their top 25% has a M+CR SAT of 1400+

I wouldn’t bother with UIUC or GT if your budget is $20k. how would you pay for the rest? Those are OOS publics. They won’t give you the aid you need.

What about SUNY Bing?

What about financial aid? Would you qualify for aid that you need at the schools that give good aid? Have you figured out what your family’s EFC would be at those kind of schools?

I used the poly’s net price calculator and It showed that I would get good aid. Pulse my parents combined make less than $50000 so I would get good fin aid.My budget is higher because my entire family is helping me not just parents.
