What are some good schools with a great CS program that is not a state school?
I am an international student and almost all state schools don't give out FA to internationals.
Most of the well known CS schools seemed to be state schools (UIUC, Gtech, UMich, etc...)
I am also not looking at the extreme reach schools like CMU, Stanford, etc..
Any recommendations?

PS: Do CS programs at an LAC have limited research opportunities? If not, what are some LACs with a good CS program?

Try U Rochester, USC, RPI, and NYU.

Aren’t those all states schools too?

No, but their full list price is still pretty high, and you have to check carefully about whether financial aid for international undergraduates is a possibility (not giving financial aid to international undergraduates is common among private schools as well).

You may also want to look at schools whose “list price” is relatively low (even if they are state schools that will not give you financial aid). Examples include University of Minnesota Twin Cities, California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO), and Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech). At the very low end in list price are the public schools in North Dakota and South Dakota, although they are not really known for computer science.

Thanks for the reply.
Any thoughts on LACs?

NYU doesn’t give aid to int’ls.

Very few schools give large amounts of aid to int’ls.

What are your stats?

How much aid do you need? How much will your family pay?

My stats are yet to come…I’m a senior but the specifics are complicated since I’m an international…I’m a mediocre student… I haven’t taken any standardized tests yet.

My family already has my brother in college…The most they can pay is probably close to 20k…=(
If not specific aid, there must be some scholarships internationals still qualify for…
For example, USF (FL) seemed to offer 10K+ if you get into their honors, even as an international…Their tuition is already in the mid 10K so qualifying for the scholarship would be a good example of a low tuition for int’l. (I don’t know much about their CS programs though…)
I know many LACs are generous with scholarships but I don’t know if internationals qualify for any.
I guess I’m looking for schools with: (generous) scholarship offers to intl, not very high acceptance rates (preferably in the 40%), and a good CS program with maybe some research opportunities.

Hahaha. Well the kind of college I mentioned above seems almost impossible to find…
Any advice or help pleasee??

Well, $20k per year can afford the out of state / international list price of the public universities in North Dakota and South Dakota. Minnesota, Virgina Tech, and Cal Poly are closer to $30k per year.

2 of the best options for you might be:

Truman State University. Truman State CS department is perfectly adequate and Truman sends about 50% of its graduates to grad schools each year. You will have opportunity for research there. Cheap, about $20,000 a year.

[Math and Computer Science Department - Truman State University](<a href=“Truman State University’s Majors & Programs”>http://mathcs.truman.edu/)

Univeristy of Minnesota - Morris. CS department is solid and schools where they send graduates for grad school is pretty impressive. Cheap, about $19,000 per year.

Both of these schools are well respected public LAS.
