Good desktop + netbook is the best choice for a student

You can always get an external optical drive; they start at $30. Plus, it seems like CDs are getting replaced by MP3s/AACs these days.

As for the chip - so what if it’s the smallest/weakest? If it does what you need it to do, what’s the issue? To put things into perspective, it’s actually about as powerful as the most powerful desktop chips of five years ago, but uses much less electricity. Unless you play 3D games, compile applications, encode music/videos, it’s very unlikely that you’ll even be able to notice a difference in performance between an Atom and a high-end chip.

It’s all usage-dependent. If you’re only going to be using the netbook for basic applications, like word processing, watching videos, web surfing, and listening to music, the Atom is more than enough power.

Plus, unless you’re into lossless music, CDs are almost entirely unused these days. Most music and programs are now distributed through the internet. I don’t have a CD drive on my own laptop yet I’m fine without it.

Netbook + Ubuntu netbook edition will run perfectly fast.
