Good Double Major Schools?

So what are some good schools that do double majors? I'm specifically looking at Drama (non BFA) and Business. I'm talking either full on two degrees, or places like Brown where it's concentrations and one degree, or like the NYU Gallatin Individualized School. Any of those programs interest me. And I would love to hear about schools that aren't in the top 20. I need schools to round out my reaches. But I'll never say no to great school like Yale if it happens to have what i'm interested in.

Carnegie Mellon?

the problem with carnegie mellon is that you have to get a BFA and you can't double major in business, unless i plan on staying at least an extra two years or more

Rice and Carnegie Mellon would be your top choices for double majoring overall.

For Drama and Business I can guarantee there is no better choice than Carnegie Mellon with a top rated Business program that competes with the likes of Wharton (Newsweek quote) and perhaps the next best drama/musical theatre program after Juilliard.

About schools not being in the top 20, you are lucky since CMU is 21 :)

PS: You can sign up for Business as your main and take on drama courses as an extra. That'll let you finish on time. The business core has quite a few electives but it definitely depends on whether you are thinking of drama, theatre, musical, etc. Also CFA kids are REQUIRED to take other courses so a minor can also work but I'd recommend the business as your main major plan because no offense but drama won't help you much in being "marketable".

Neither Brown nor Yale offers an undergraduate degree in business. This is true of many medium sized universities and smaller liberal arts colleges. Many schools do, however, offer majors in related fields like economics or international relations (or really, ANY liberal arts field) and have strong track records for getting graduates into MBA programs.

In addition to Brown and Yale, for schools that do not offer business as a major but send many students to top MBA programs and also have good theater programs I’d look at Williams, Kenyon, Bowdoin and, if female, Smith.

Williams is the school that I’m the most familiar with and I can say unreservedly that it would be possible to double major in theater plus economics or any one of dozens of other liberal arts categories AND go on to get into an excellent post-graduate business school or law school or PhD program.

Williams has just spent $50 million on a new performing arts center. It is the home of one of the east coast's oldest and most respected summer theaters which though not directly related to the college, rubs off on the ambience. Theater is a well funded department and well supported activities with many performance opportunities, both for majors and non-majors.

I don't mind brown because its a business/economics degree. Also I'm not that interested in going to a Liberal arts college. I like the variety of a research university.

And about CMU... how do a get a double degree with business and theatre? All of their theatre degrees are BFA. Or would I be getting a business major with a theatre minor?

While Rice is a great school for double majors (and it is beginning to offer monors in some subjects), unfortunately, like Yale and Brown, there is no undergrad business degree (only MBA).

Cate: What do you want the drama major for? I'm actually quite baffled on the double major of business/drama as there is no situation I can think of that will require such a double.

If you want to go to Broadway or something and have a little business background I'd suggest the Drama major and a business minor which is just about required since CFA kids have to take many other courses in other schools.

If you want to do Business but also want to learn theatre then a minor would be perfect.

A CFA "degree" is not a pre-requisite for acting/theatre on Broadway or anything. It is more of "what you learn" that is important. The business degree on the other hand means a lot more to employers. That is why some kids do a CFA minor whether it be drama/theatre/voice/etc as the important thing is what you learn. The recruitment opportunities for acting/theatre are open to most all students as they require auditions and not really "GPA" or anything. As long as you are good you can use the top notch faculty to get where you want to go theatre-wise.

Finally, I do believe there is a way to have a mixed double (it might not actually be called that but both cores will be on your transcript/coursework). Talking to the CFA board would be your best bet. Their directory is located on the CMU site.

if you went to a school with minimal gen eds, that might speed things up
smith
vassar
amherst
urochester

you should also look into villanova university.
you also get two degrees when you graduate as a double major..
so that's 2 degrees up on your wall after undergrad :]
a lot of schools don't give you 2 degrees when you graduate.

Yo that's called a dual degree (not a double major) and is quite common though harder than a double major. Villanova is not a very respectable university though. If you want mediocre colleges there are thousands of them so go look 'em up yourself.

If you want the best in business and arts then check out CMU and NYU.

USoCal also encouarges dual majors. They regularly give scholarships to folks who have majors in diverse fields called "Renaisance Scholars," to help offset the additional cost that may occur in getting all the requirements met.

http://www.usc.edu/programs/ugprograms/renaissance/about.shtml

USC is mediocre.

You can NOT double major at CMU in business and drama. It would take 8 years. Both programs are so competitive and so intensive that there's absolutely no way you can do it. I asked if I could double major with drama and English and was told no, so there's no way you could do it with Tepper. There is no drama minor at Carnegie Mellon, or at NYU (unless you want to do the CAS drama, "theatre, cinema history, and dramatic literature" program). NYU will NOT let you double major with Tisch and Stern.

Anywhere that is "known" for its BFA drama program will not let you double major, except those schools that have a BA in addition to a BFA (like Michigan). The conservatory programs are far too intensive.

To the OP: I'm also double majoring in public policy and theatre (again, a BA, not a BFA). My list is: Michigan, Michigan State, Brown, Cornell, Stanford, W&M, UVA, WUSTL, Northwestern, Oberlin and Kalamazoo.

You can PM me if you want to talk about double majoring in drama. The process for theatre majors is so vastly different from the regular process that a lot advice you'll get from non-arts students is useless.

haha kalamazoo makes me laugh.

i suggest just minoring in drama and doing business major. u can't do anything with drama majors now a days.
