Good engineering school in/near a city

This is my first post ever on college confidential. I'm looking for a university that is in or near the city. I visited Columbia and Penn and I loved them both, but i feel like they both aren't very good engineering schools. I am looking to either study mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering. I also have visited hopkins. I liked its engineering program more, but did love the campus and area as much as i loved the others. Are there any other schools that have campuses like Columbia or Penn, but have better engineering schools. Unless you feel that they are good engineering schools. If so, could you explain why. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Rice. Beautiful campus. Vibrant city. Fantastic mechanical and biomedical engineering. Small classes. Relatively inexpensive compared to Penn or Columbia.

Hellooooo.
NC STATE.
They have a great engineering program. One of the best in the country.

MIT, for one. Stanford, for another.

I dunno if you’d consider Harvey Mudd ‘close’ - Claremont is 30 miles from LA. Johns Hopkins is in the midst of Baltimore. Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, and UTA are also strong choices.

BTW, Penn does have great engineering. So definitely apply there if you liked it. Wouldn’t pick Columbia over Penn or Rice. Rice has a campus most like Penn. CMU’s campus is more urban looking. Harvey Mudd’s campus is very modern.

MIT
UC Berkeley
CalTech
UCLA
USC
Carnegie Mellon
Georgia Tech
UT-Austin
Columbia
U Maryland
U Minnesota
NC State
Ohio State

Ask anyone to name the very best engineering school in the world, and almost all will say MIT. It happens to have a nice campus in a major city. How was this not your first thought?

Try Northwestern. 25 mts from downtown Chicago.

And don’t judge a program by it’s rank. It makes little difference at the undergrad level.

Did you consider liberal arts colleges?

You can look at Harvey Mudd, Swarthmore, Lafayette college etc
They have engineering programs as well

Washington University (St. Louis)
Texas Christian University (Fort Worth- Dallas)
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (MA)
U of Rochester (NY)
Rensalaer Polytechnic Insitute (NY)

Cooper Union (NYC).

drexel!!!

Out of curiosity, what makes you say Columbia and Penn aren’t good engineering schools? They aren’t known for them, but how many programs out there that you would put ahead of them? Two or three dozen at most? If you’re saying they aren’t elite engineering schools, then I’d agree, but I would certainly say they’re way above average compared to the hundreds of engineering schools out there.

Are you looking for schools in urban settings? Or schools in large cities? What is it about Columbia’s and Penn’s campuses that you liked?

Berkeley!!! It has easily top 5 undergrad engineering in the country… a ranking that few will argue! USNews ranks it #2 for undergrad engineering in the USA!

I really wouldn’t call Stanford near a city. Palo Alto is a lovely place but definitely not urban…San Francisco is rather far away.

University Of Pittsburgh

Home of the WOLP FACK!!!

Los Angeles -> CALTECH, Harvey Mudd, UCLA, and USC
