Good Engineering Schools for B+ student

@Oliver17 “I am curious about acceptances to Purdue, Michigan State, Ohio State in state and if anyone has any experience with Northeastern or Drexel. My son is a b/b minus student. He got a 34 on his ACT the first time ( 36 Science, 34 Math, 31 English and 33 reading. ) and is interested in Mechanical engineering. I can’t tell by looking online if these schools are a possibility for him. He has a challenging course load but his GPA is a little lower. ANY insight offered would be greatly appreciated.”

What is his gpa? Maybe around a 3.0? Of the schools you listed, I would think Michigan State and Drexel would be the most feasible.

My son is a B+ (3.5GPA/4.0) student with a 33 ACT. He was accepted in Engineering at UIUC, UMnTC, Iowa, Utah, Purdue. Don’t count on getting any money with a 30 ACT. He should prep diligently for the next tests. I recommend Iowa State for a lower cost school with quality engineering departments. If he can increase his ACT he will likely get decent merit scholarships there.

@oliver17 I ditto what others have said about Purdue: no aid for OOS. OSU is for students who can hunker down and figure out how to aggressively seek help when needed. I have witnessed kids who are stellar go to OSU and not succeed. It’s not for everyone. And indeed, they are looking to bring in the OOS dollars.

Original poster: have you considered U of Dayton or U of Toledo? Both have good engineering schools. UD is private and small, but they do give aid to top students. You’d need to do the math to see if it’s affordable for you (it wasn’t for us). Toledo is public, a bit bigger, requires co-ops for engineering degree (at least 3). Honors housing is nice. I imagine he could qualify for good merit from Toledo.

Thanks for your feedback everyone. I know he wouldn’t get merit aid, just curious about possible options. He actually just got his new ACT score back today and got a 36. He’s capable, he just needs to get motivated.
