Good engineering schools for me?

Right now I am a white male senior in a public high school in Fredericksburg, VA.
Plan on applying to UVA and VT. Need more schools that wouldn't be expensive.

Income Bracket: <$49,999

If you are looking for merit scholarships, then :

University of Pittsburgh
Miami University in Ohio
Northeastern University
Case Western Reserve University

However, if you get into University of Virginia, definitely go there.

“However, if you get into University of Virginia, definitely go there.”

VT is superior to UVA for engineering.

Wow…your ACT is much higher than your SAT.

Alabama would give you free tuition plus 2500 per year for your ACT and eng’g major. That would give you about $110k in scholarship money.

Do you have a non-custodial parent?

As far as needing schools that “won’t be expensive”…please clarify. How much can your parents pay each year? If the answer is “little or nothing” then the issue isn’t “won’t be expensive” - the issue will be " need nearly all costs covered." The fact is, if you have to pay $15k per year (which is “won’t be expensive”), you won’t be able to pay that if your parents won’t pay.

UVA will meet need, but I don’t know what VT’s aid for instate students is like. Run the NPC on VT’s website.

“Wow…your ACT is much higher than your SAT.”

I have a 34 act and a 1850 sat these things happen.

Run some net price calculators at schools that meet full need(generally top 25+ but there are others)

Find out how much your parents can pay

They could pay little to nothing. I can’t afford to go to OOS without merit aid. Private schools usually will give massive amounts of aid because of my income bracket. Also a first gen student. I know about Alabama and have added it as a safety, thanks.

Thanks for all your input again guys. I’ve looked into all schools that give generous aid and here is the list I’ve compiled. Let me know if there are any schools on here that are a waste of time as there is no way i’d be accepted. I know some of the reaches are very, very high reaches so let me know, thanks. Also keep in mind that I am looking for a quality education from a prestigious engineering program with a low cost/great aid. My parents have little money to help pay.

Reaches:
Cornell (need to raise SAT II’s)
Northwestern
John Hopkins
Duke
UPenn
Vanderbilt
Brown

Match-Reach:
UVA
Tufts

Matches:
Virginia Tech
Lehigh

Safeties:
Lafayette
University of Alabama
Lousiana Tech (full ride)
Howard (full ride)

Anyone think they could help me narrow down my list?

Start with the safety’s, the money is guaranteed at 3 of those schools. Choose one

I’ve eliminated Howard. Would probably feel out of place going to a historic African American college. Not to be racist in any way. Bama and Lousiana Tech it is

Start with the safety’s, the money is guaranteed at 3 of those schools. Choose one

When a student desperately needs funding, he should have 2-3 financial safeties. that way, if those end up being his only affordable schools, he still gets to make a choice next spring. No one wants to feel railroaded into their only affordable school…bad for morale. choice is good.

Well said mom2collegekids

In my experience, Vanderbilt and Lehigh are good with financial aid (U. of Rochester as well).

Note, however, that plenty of black people do attend colleges which are not mostly black (same for any other race or ethnicity, including white).

I’m fine with that! If I’m right, Howard is around 96% African American though.
