I've finally decided what I want to major in, but I don't know which schools are strong in English. I have some requirements that are very important to me, though.
-- can't be extremely selective (less than 20%)... I just don't have a chance at Yale
-- preferably in South or Southwest
-- preferably not too expensive (less than $40,000/yr total)
-- must offer Arabic lang classes
-- preferably small-medium

Any suggestions? For a reach, I am thinking about Georgetown because it seems to have a good language program for Arabic. I have already applied to Rice and been accepted at UT, and now I just need some matches to apply to. I have a good GPA, class rank, and essay. Little weak on ECs, but recs should be at least decent.

You might want to add Duke. I'm obviously biased, but most people agree Duke has a great English program, and its Arabic program is also pretty good from the people I've asked (I considered taking it). Duke also sends several people to the American University in Cairo each year, which is a great place to learn/improve Arabic.

Wake Forest also has a great English program, and they offer Arabic in the classics department (unusual, lol). Davidson is also great in both.

Oxford College at Emory U
U Chicago (I know it is not in the south)
U Notre Dame
Johns Hopkins
U Michigan AA (I know it is big)
U Minnesota TC
Washington U St Louis
U Washington
NYU

Thanks for the suggestions. What do you guys think of William and Mary? How hard is it to get out-of-state?

Very. UVa and W&M have wonderful English programs, but they are extremely difficult to get into OOS, which is why I didn't mention them.

Harder to get into than Duke?

UNC is harder than Duke for OOS, but I'm not sure about UVa and W&M, both of which have a considerably larger OOS population. Probably near the same level as Duke, though.

I knew that about UNC, but since, like you said, UVa and W&M take more OOS students, I thought it would be somewhat easier. Do you know if UNC-Asheville is easier OOS than Chapel Hill?
