Good english schools

One of my friends who wants to get a degree in english, say that it doesn't matter where you go for an english (lang + lit.)degree, because so many schools offer them. I said there have to be some schools that have great English programs. So far he has gotten into UW-Madison

My 2 questions are-

1-Does UW-Madison have a good English program?
2-What are some other schools that have good english programs?

Be sure to add Kenyon to the list; it has probably the best English program in the nation. Sure, it's in the Ohioan sticks, but it's still a very strong LAC.

Engilsh is a great gen. ed. major. I don't know about the east coast but for the west UCD UCLA have great programs...

U of Michigan has a nice English program if you want a school like Wisc. --- not sure about Wisconsin's English program. Other schools with excellent English programs besides those already mentioned:Oberlin, Middlebury, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Knox College, U of Chicago.

Your friend is close to correct - almost all selective universities and most selective liberal arts schools have good English departments. If your friend wants to teach college, or work at a major publishing company it can make a difference where you go though, due to some reputation and networking advantages.

UW Madison does have a solid English program. To Carolyn's list I would add most selective universities and the following liberal arts schools: Vassar, Barnard, Bard, Skidmore, Smith, Davidson, Carleton, Scripps and Pomona.

As far as Barnard and Scripps go, they're both women's colleges (it sounds like the friend in question is a guy), but have cross-enrollment with other colleges. So if interested in these programs, he'd have to look at Columbia (for Barnard), or Pomona/CMC/Pitzer (for Scripps. Mudd is there, too, but probably of no interest to someone who knows he wants to go into English). I don't know if Smith has cross-enrollment.

Smith has cross enrollment with a couple of other schools in the area.
