I have a 3.64 GPA, took about half the AP classes at my school. I've taken all available honors courses. Scored a 1790 on the SAT. Do I have a shot at the top 25 colleges according to US News?

I'm also president of the dance club and really good at computers (I can design some pretty advanced applications including online games and I've been designing websites since 3rd grade, but I'm not sure how I would list that in my application?).

So do I have a good shot? If so, which schools am I likely to get into?

Your stats are holding you back, but if you can write a really good essay with a hook and conduct a good interview, you can greatly increase your chances. Make sure you show interest in the schools you apply to, though. Visit the campus and express to the schools what it is that you like about that institution in particular.

Well I hear I have a good shot at Carnegie Mellon because I'm interested in computers and dance (which they are known for).

I've researched some of the top 25 schools, some of their average freshmen high school GPA's are around the 3.60 GPA area. So I'm thinking I have a good chance? Feel free to tell me otherwise and what I need to improve on.

I'm also guessing I won't be able to show off the programs and sites I've developed on the computer in the application? =

You may be able to send in supplemental materials including the program, but make sure it's very impressive, because if they are going to put extra time into your app to look at your program, make sure it is flawless!

Also, your GPA is average/bit below average. 3.6 seems kind of low, what was your source for that?

Don't loose hope though, there are more important things than stats.

Definitely retake your SAT Reasoning (very important, and preferably a 2100+ score), and do well (repeat: REALLY WELL, like 700+ scores) on your Subject Tests if you are aiming for the top 25. You still have two more chances in Oct. and Nov. before ED/EA applications are due. Study (thoroughly) over the summer: "No Excellence can be acquired without constant Practice." Lastly, don't procrastinate.

Why a top 25 school? Why not a school you are interested in? Anyways, I had the same stats as you essentially (although a tiny bit higher) and got into Wisconsin. Was waitlisted at Michigan in-state. So they will be reaches, but not impossible reaches. If you are looking at pure prestige and what schools you could potentially get into, then i'd recommend Carnegie Mellon, Michigan, Virginia, and Vanderbilt, but all would be reaches for you. Every other top 25 I don't see you getting into.

Really work that computer advantage and dance club into your essay. That's gonna be crucial if you want to get into the other top 25, otherwise you gotta improve on the scores. cheers =D

now, would you honestly be happy at every single of those 'top 25' schools? i would find that very hard to believe. why dont you focus on schools that fit YOU, instead of focusing on the usnews list?
