Is this a good first semester schedule? I plan on studying at least an hour for each class on every week day, will that be sufficient?

It will probably be sufficient, but are you sure you are willing to dedicate that time to studying? Are you living off campus or on? UF and Gainesville both have a lot to see, and you may get caught up in the fun. Just make sure to focus. Other than that, I think that is a good schedule.

I’m living on campus and my online room selection date is on June 6th, I work about 30 hours a week currently and still go to highschool full time. I won’t have a job in college so i’ll just set aside a four hour shift every weekday that i will go to the library and study. Then when i’m actually at my dorm or anywhere else it will be free time, and when i go to the library it will be like going to work. Is that a good plan?

@ Amigable: I’m in exactly the same boat, trying to come up w/ a “GOOD FIRST SEMESTER SCHEDULE.”
I’m probably going to register for only 12-13 credits during first semester, and so far CHM 2045 is the only course I’m sure I want to take (maybe we’ll be in the same class!!!). So I still need to find ~3 more courses.
You might want to consider finding a course to meet the Gen Ed Diversity requirement (I’m looking for a D course as well).
What’s your major?
Also, are you bringing any credits to UF via AP or DE?

@ Current Students: I would really appreciate any insights/experiences that you care to share about any of the following courses:
CHM 2045/2045L - GEN CHEM 1
PHY 2048/2048L - PHYSICS W/ CALC 1 (I already have AP credit for PHY 2053 and 2054)
BSC 2010/2010L - INTEG PRINC OF BIO 1
MAS 4105 - LINEAR ALGEBRA (I’ve already taken MAC 2311, 2312, 2313 and MAP 2302)
EDG 4920 - STEP 1: INQ APP TO TCH
SPC 2608 - INTRO TO PUBLIC SPEAKING

Also, any suggestions for “Diversity” courses?

I have heard and my dad tells me that when he was at UF it was the same. Chem 2045 which is the first chem for engineers, and calculas I are weed out courses.

Anyone have a different opinion?

I have a 5 in ap bio and my major is neurobiology

CHM & MAC are incredibly hard here at UF no matter how good you are at the subject so make sure you’re other 2 classes are average in difficulty and have at least 1 easy yet interesting class. This usually involves scouring professor reviews.

I recommend seeing what classes are available on ISIS, using gatorschedule.net to see who your professors are, and finally visiting ratemyprofessor.com or myedu.com to check the professors ratings and pick accordingly. This is especially true for CHM & MAC if you have the chance to pick a more forgiving professor; chances are probably no.

Also keep in mind that UF just passed a “bill” that switches tuition to the block system. So each fall & spring you will be billed 15 credit hours even if you’re taking only 12. For example, say 12 hours usually costs $2200 and 15 hours costs $2500, you will be billed $2500 each fall/spring. This doesn’t affect your prepaid hours but your tuition bill is still $300 more. As for bright futures if they give you $1200 for 12 hours and $1500 for 15 hours, it will help to pretty much pay for the tuition increase and of course if you take 18 credits you’ll have some extra financial aid in your pocket. Just something to keep in mind and if you need more info go to ufl.edu and type in the search bar “block tuition”

@Orange-Would taking 18 credit hours be too much for the first semester? I’d love some extra money.

I took 16 credits my first semester and 18 credits this past spring and it wasnt bad, but the courses I took were fairly easy save for 2 of them.

Here are my recommendations for a manageable semester:

12 credits: any difficulty

15 credits: 3 major courses, 1 easy/average, 1 online
my favorite since you have essentially 4 courses on campus and an easy one online and also extra mulah in the pre-block tuition days

18 credits: 2 major courses, 2 easy/average, 2 very easy online

Very easy online courses are: FOS20001 (Man’s Food), THE2000 (Theater Appreciation). They are so easy that you almost forget you’re taking them which could land you in big trouble.

if you have 4 credit hour courses such as CHM, MAC, etc. dont take more than 2 of these your first semester. Make your first semester bearable there’s no rush and you can utilize a summer semester to even out your course plan. 99% of you will change majors anyway. I changed mine twice officially and countless times unofficially so I know a lot about most majors UF offers, the career opportunities in most, strategy, compensation etc.

For example: I was going to fulfill the prereqs so I could enter Florida’s college of pharmacy based on the fact that pharmacists are paid well over 6 figures, the schooling wasn’t rough, and the job opportunities were great; I thought I was set. That is until I found out 13 new pharm schools opened up which will saturate the market, job opportunities were dwindling, there was already an oversaturation of pharmacists and the job was too boring anyway for me to pursue that. I was just too caught up in the money. I bet all you will eventually google like I did “what are the highest paying and most satisfying jobs.” I’ve realized now that salary isn’t that big of a deal anymore. You only live once and it’s going to be on my terms.

Don’t take classes just for the sake of taking classes…

IMO online classes are a waste of time and money, especially when they are unnecessary in the first place.

I agree, although the online courses I took were to finish my Gen-Eds which sometimes seem unnecessary and a waste of time and money.

@Orange What do you recommend for a Marketing Major?

When I was completing my AA in HS it was concentrated in business so I was taking the 7 prerequisites courses for UF’s business school. Unfortunately it’s much easier to get into UF’s business school as a freshman than as transfer; I think transfers need a 3.7 in these course to get admitted which I didn’t have:

CGS2531 - a pain at UF, easy everywhere else
ECO2013 - average. I find economics very interesting
ECO2023 - ^^^
ACG2022 - its the worst. the closest you’ll get to indentured servitude: creating reports
ACG2071 - the most rewarding ACG course. you learn to use reports to make decisions
MAC2233 - dumbed down calculus
STA2023 - not bad

Try and get these done by the end of sophomore year or earlier. Best thing to do is take 2 of each every semester and find a minor that you like or get gen eds done as quickly as possible. If you’re entering in the summer get CGS over with. I had a roommate who was taking that class and it wasn’t so much difficult as frustrating.

Pair accounting with economics; I believe those two classes intersect a bit.

Fall/ Spring
-ACG2022/ACG2071
-ECO2023/ECO2013
-gen ed/gen ed
-gen ed/gen ed
-gen ed/gen ed or electives

this is also helpful for planning your junior and senior years:
https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/business/majors/marketing.aspx

and of course degree shopping on ISIS is even more helpful

So what everyone is saying is that this is a difficult but manageable schedule and I should be able to get all As if I work very hard?

yep, that schedule is decent. work very very hard in MAC & CHM and find interesting/easy professors for ENC and Humanities and this semester should be very manageable.

get involved on campus!

Thanks a lot orange

Hope you dont mind if i piggy back on here. Im starting UF as a freshmen this year. My major is Chemistry/Physics. This is my tendative schedule any advice.

PHY 2060 Enriched physics with calculus 1
CHM 2046 General Chemistry 2 (with lab)
MAC 2312 Analytical Geo and Calculus 2
CLT 3370 Myths of Greeks and Romans.

Now I took 6 AP classes and 7 exams this year and I wasnt overwhemled or anything. Th problem is I have no idea how bad a college class is. Alot of people have told me that they took both a college class and its AP equivalent and the AP is 9 times of 10 harder.

I got a letter form the phy department about enriched phy. I took AP Phy B and im feelin really strong on the test, I had a great teacher.

I took AP calc and im pretty sure ill pass the test. Also, in order to take enriched phy i have to take calc 2. so dont make an arguement against calc without attacking enriched phy.

I took ap chem and it was a peice of cake. Id rather skip chem 1.

And the last one. Im done with all my socity and diversity general eds. Im taking it cause i didnt want to take another sci/math. I love mythology and i looked over the syllabus of a past class and its not to bad, i new the basic idea behind most of it. What Im afraid of is that its a 3000 level course. If anyones taken it can they give me some feedback.

I know I can handle each of these individually, and Im not going to party eveynight but i would like to leave my room at least for a breather. Another thing, dont comment on grammer. No one really cares, it just makes you look like a snob

@ Got Big Dreams I would say you have your hands full with Physics, Chem, and MAC, so I don’t recommend taking the CLT class, especially if you don’t need it. If it’s something that interests you, I do think you should pursue it, but not your first semester when you’re also taking 3 difficult classes (and a lab). I’d just table it for now. It probably won’t be too hard though, it’s just going to be a big lecture and with the rest of your schedule, I’d try to get a smaller class, just to get some professor/student interaction in during the first semester. It’s pretty easy to feel like a part of the system when all your classes are in lecture halls.

I agree—I don’t think that with those 3 powerhouse/ difficult/ weed out classes, I don’t think you need to take the CLT. Do you have 12 credits? Do you have to take a physics lab with enriched? If you don’t have 12 credits with the 3 powerhouse classes, maybe take CLT if you really, really like the subject matter, but don’t if you already have 12 credits. These 3 have really difficult tests. My S took Calc 2 last semester and even though he got a 5 on AP Calc test and took Calc 1 last fall as a freshman, the tests for Calc 2 were really difficult. Please don’t overload yourself. Make some new friends, explore the campus, join some clubs and enjoy yourself a bit. 12 credits as a freshman is just about perfect. Try to stick to that and take more credits/semester later.
