I applied to American RD and will hopefully hear back soon regarding my acceptance decision. I want to major in either biology or biochemistry and go on to graduate school. I know American is well-known for poli sci, international relations, etc. Would I get a good life science education here, or is the science program not very strong?

AU is certainly more well known for its IR program and not its science program. On the other hand, my daughter thinks you would get a lot of merit money since you would be “so rare.” She told me that a friend of hers actually declined MIT and Cornell to go to AU as a math and lit major because she preferred AU’s collaborative atmosphere.

One of my professional associates did quite well for herself as an AU Chemistry major. Although science may not be in AU’s wheelhouse as much as SIS and KCBA, I suggest you check out the programs you are interested on the AU web site and further investigate.

I really wouldn’t go to AU for science. Unless you want to do something with government and science, it’s kind of like you might as well go to your state university or an actual school who is more rigorous and more well known for their sciences. I’m not saying people don’t do well with majors in sciences at AU but like you might as well save your money and go somewhere else.

My daughter told me that science classes are small and that AU has a high med school acceptance rate. Don’t know if med school is your goal… Science students often do internships at a nearby hospital and AU has a cancer research lab.

Actually, I am not interested in medicine, but am interested in going into forensic science, so need to obtain a bachelors degree in one of the natural sciences first. I thought science internships and research experiences might be good at AU. Can anyone comment about that? l also met a Chemistry professor when I visited who has an interest in forensic science and has written a text book on the subject. I want to be sure that AU’s science programs will provide a strong enough foundation so I have a good chance of being accepted into graduate programs in forensic science.

You may have better options if your interest is in forensic science. I suggest looking at all your options once you receive all your decisions. AU has a terrific accepted students day. I would suggest attending all accepted student days at schools that you are admitted and are interested in, and then decide from there.
