I'm a high school junior with grade problems. I have a decent GPA (3.906); I'd prefer better, but this is fine. However, my school is ridiculously overachieving, and so I'm ranked 32 out of 222 (unweighted - my school doesn't weight). There are 7 4.0s who are tied for first. My school doesn't report rank, but the colleges I'm thinking of (HPS, Chicago, Michigan) would probably know that GPAs from my school can go much higher. How much does this matter? Is the 3.906 more important, or the 32/222?

As long as your school does not report rank, you're fine for those schools.

my situation is totoally different

prolly around 3.6 by college admission time but at least top 20%, prolly top 10%.

ugh i know what you mean about overachieving ppl/competitve school
hopefully your school won't report rank
but rank does matter as well (not as much if they don't apply to the same school as you) b/c the colleges compare you to other people from your school who applied to the same school
