I have only taken the SATIIs once and unfortunately I did not put much effort into the tests and didn't study... I didn't realize they would be that tough. So I did pretty okay on my SATs, like 700+ per section, (not amazing I know, but alright), but I didn't do so hot on my SATIIs. I have the grades. I have the ECs. I have the essays. I'll probably have the AP scores. But my SATIIs SUCK! What should I do? How much will this kill me. I have a 680 and a 590 as SATII scores currently... eek. I have one more shot to retake but I am still worried. This time I won't be an idiot and I'll study, so I'll hopefully do better. But how much could low SATII scores screw me over?

It’s not too late for you to retake them…and you really should. If you’re going for top schools, 700+ is adequate, but 750+ is ideal.

I’m just the opposite, ha ha. On SAT IIs, I have two 800s, and hoping for a third when I get back my June scores. But my SAT I scores are pretty mediocre… Too bad we can’t combine scores!

Well SAT II’s are pretty important. Probably the same weight as SAT’s. If u are stellar in a particular area, then maybe your SAT II’s shouldn’t be a big deal. but it seems like everything you have is not too outstanding. Unless you are hunting for Ivys or other top tier schools, I recommend u retake SAT II’s in october or november.

Luckily, there are a lot of other SAT II subjects to choose from. So, if you messed up on Lit, for example, you can try out US History and see if you score any higher.

I really don’t understand why SAT IIs are given any importance at all. They’re pretty much equivalent to a final exam for one year in one particular subject. Why should that weigh as much as a reasoning test?

I agree. What SAT IIs are you all taking?

The SAT II’s are supplements more than anything. Also, “reasoning tests” aren’t fully reliable.

The SAT2s show ability to master a subject. An adcom at Harvard said that one day they might have applicants take 5 SAT2s in place of the SAT.

I highly doubt SAT IIs are weighted anywhere near the SAT I. Most schools dont require them. Including Washu and northwestern. And the only people who say reasoning tests arent accurate are the ones who get bad scores. The SATIIs show nothing, because if you are bad at something, you can study FOR THE TEST and get an 800. And no, i didnt score poorly on the SATII

i would say some schools require two or three of SATIIs, and they can be VERY important. i would say retake the test, if u are aiming for the top schools. something in the 600s will hurt your chance.
but it depends on HOW strong your ECs and essays are. if they are superb, then i would say don’t worry about.

subject tests are WAY more important than reasoning. Reasoning really dont tell one anything. its just matter of practice and preparation. subject though really tells admintioner you are the master of certain subject. to get 750…you really gotta know the stuffs.

Some schools allow you to submit three SAT subject tests instead of the SAT reasoning test. I’d say the subject tests are important, at least for those schools.

Well, at least you have the hard part down (good grades and SAT I).
