Good Grades--Not so good SAT Scores-College Suggestions?

Good Grades (no AP's 2 college courses)--Not so good SAT Scores-College Suggestions?

Looking for any size school within an hour or so from a largo metro area--preferably NYC, Wash DC, Boston, San Francisco, or Chicago..

Thanks

[Optional List | FairTest](ACT/SAT Optional List - Fairtest)

What’s “good” and “not so good”. Specifics would be helpful, but test optional schools would work too.

She has looked at the schools on the FairTest website, we were just wondering by experience where she may have a chance.

She has a 3.9 GPA 1490 SAT–she will take SAT again and is considering the ACT but because of ADHD issues we know she will test low (and she cannot get accommodations because the school psychologist basically said she tested “normal” on the required assessments-she was actually just too smart to score low but she has not been able to come close to finishing any section of the SAT)

Don’t really want to make excuses…it is what it is

She’s a junior now? Investigate the test-optional application to American University, located in a quiet residential area of DC, near Metro. This year, the test-optional deadline was earlier in the fall than the regular decision deadline.

Where does that leave her rank wise at her school? Are her classes college prep, honors, AP?

SockherMom, is your daughter’s 3.9 GPA unweighed? Has she taken a challenging courseload in high school? How are her ECs? Is she a good writer?

Check out “Colleges That Change Lives” website.

Look at some top SAT optional colleges like Bowdoin, Wake Forest, Holy Cross

Sikorsky-We will look into American Uni-Thanks for the recommendation

2college-Her school does not have a class ranking at this point- Her classes are all College Prep-. 1 Honors and 1 College Class- so unweighted but with her college class and 1 Honors, I am not sure

Alexandre-She is currently taking Statistics, Chemistry, English, Creative Writing, US History & just finished a college Philosophy class. She is a very good writer, will be a 4 year varsity athlete and other good EC’s. But, she does not test well!!

Slumom-Will check out the website-Thanks

1980-Will also check out those schools!

If the classes are all college prep, I don’t think she should aim at Bowdoin or the other top score optional. I think she would be a hood candidate for LACs ranked between 50-100. I would look for thos schools on fairtest.

What is a hood candidate?

I think that was a typo for “good candidate.”

Is your child a junior?

What does she want to major in?

What is your budget?

What else does she want in a school?

what was her M+CR score?

Might look at Holy Cross-very good SAT optional school-1 hour from Boston.

mom2-She is a junior-- looking at business/communication/fashionmerchandising–budget is open but the less the better–she only wants a larger metro area otherwise no specifics–

Ha-I though Hood candidate was something special at Bowdoin

Not sure what M-CR scores are?

Par72-Will look at Holy Cross - Thanks

Mom2collegekids was asking for a breakdown of your daughter’s SAT scores. Most colleges look more heavily at the math (M) and critical reasoning (CR) sections than the writing (W).

“She has a 3.9 GPA 1490 SAT–she will take SAT again and is considering the ACT but because of ADHD issues we know she will test low (and she cannot get accommodations because the school psychologist basically said she tested “normal” on the required assessments-she was actually just too smart to score low but she has not been able to come close to finishing any section of the SAT)”

Do some more research on accommodations. Perhaps your school psychologist is correct, but you need to find out directly from the testing companies themselves. To start, look for threads on this topic in the Parents Forum as well as in the Special Ed. Forum.

Personally, I would not worry so much about the test scores given her academic record. Yes, there are some places that use the test scores as a quick and easy way of eliminating candidates, but most colleges and universities care a lot more about the transcript.

We just received her SAT scores and she omitted 35 questions…it seems like a lot to me, is it? Do most kids finish all the questions or is there a certain percentage that are normally left blank?

I remember filling in all mine actually, but how many questions in proportion to the test is 35

For test optional (but not urban) you might look at:

Connecticut College (CT)
Drew University (NJ)
Mt. Holyoke (MA) Women’s College
Agnes Scott (GA) Women’s College
