Does Illinois have a good history program? I might minor/double major. What colleges - public ones (don't feel like wasting money on private) - have a good history program?

U Missouri Columbia
You will pay out-of-state tuition everywhere else
Some publics are kinder to OOS than others

Cal (top 3), Michigan-Ann Arbor (top 5), UCLA (top 10) and Wisconsin-Madison (top 10) have the best History programs among state schools. However, it really depends on what you want. For example, for Colonial and US History, William & Mary is hard to beat. UNC-Chapel Hill, UVA, Indiana-Bloomington, Texas-Austin and Illinois-Urbana Champaign also have excellent History departments.

Tpeck:

suggest you check the websites for OOS at the publics before you ignore the privates. Berkeley and UCLA cost early nas much as a private school for OOS. Madison, at $10k less, is a relative "bargain."

Agreed. OOS tuition can be EXPENSIVE. Not to mention you might get more $ at a private. Roughly in order of decreasing quality,

Berkeley
UCLA
Michigan
Wisconsin
UNC Chapel Hill
CUNY
UVA
Rutgers
UT Austin
Minnesota
Indiana
Illinois

Actually, I would say Michigan is slightly better (hardly significant) than UCLA in History. Otherwise, you are pretty spot on.

I'd add one more to the list of larger universities: William and Mary has an excellent history program.

And, so does St. Mary's College of Maryland, a small public liberal arts college that "feels" like a private school.
