Hello, I'm wondering whether I am facing reality at all or not. I am a freshman at a local public school. I have a gpa of about 3.7. I run xc, ski race, row crew, and play lax, and sail. I am a fairly good athlete. I am in all honors classes and spanish 3. I participate in the empty bowl club and I'm on student council. The schools i'm looking at are Brooks, St. Georges, Tabor, Holderness and St. Marks. Can anybody tell me whether I am within reason here? and maybe if you have any schools you suggest I look into? Thanks!

I think you sound totally within reason. Do you have teachers or other adults in your life who will write strong recs for you? Have you taken the SSATs? I’m not saying that the schools you’re looking aren’t very competitive–they are–but you have the athletics background and the academic performance to put yourself in the mix. Go for it!

Well, what I won’t do is comment on your chances of getting into those schools . . . but I will say that I like your choices. I also think you participate in any interesting variety of sports, which may help you gain admission somewhere, but will certainly also help you to identify other schools that you might be interested in.

I’d suggest that you take a good long look at [Boarding School Review](<a href=“Boarding School Search Results”>Boarding School Search Results) and see what other schools strike you as interesting. There you should be able to find out which schools offer sailing, crew, etc.

I do know that Northfield Mount Hermon has a very strong downhill racing program, as does Proctor in New Hampshire. Loomis Chaffee might be an option also. But look through the schools on Boarding School Review and see what you find. Good luck!

Loomis doesn’t have crew, if that would be a dealbreaker for you.

Thank you for your responses! I do think I’d get good recs from teachers, as long with my middle school principle. I haven’t taken the ssat’s yet, but i am taking them Dec. 10th. I have only rowed crew a little bit, but if I went away I think I would be quite interested, so no it is not a deal-breaker but I am interested. I really want a school with a strong sense of community.
