<p>Is it a good idea to bring in religion and/or politics into an essay because there is the chance the person who reads it is totally against it your idea.I wrote for one my UC essays that my great experience was at a protest against a certain issue...I didn't elaborate further on the actual issue moreso than the fact that I was a "advocate" for civil rights (I thought the phrase was more politically neutral).</p>
<p>No, that's totally in fine. In fact, a lot of schools like students who stand up for what they believe in and are willing to work hard to achieve goals that affect more than just themselves.</p>
<p>It's a little risky (although admissions people try their best to be unbiased and nonpartial, they're humans too, susceptible to preferences), but if you can really make your case about how it's important to you without discrediting anyone else's views, then you'll be fine.</p>
