Your GPA, rank and test scores indicate you are a qualified applicant. Apply SCEA to Yale if it is your number one choice. Beyond that, it’s virtually impossible to predict with certainty anyone’s chances as so much of the applications process is subjective and comes down to how an admissions director “feels” after reading your teacher recommendations, guidance counselor report and essays, and compares them to all other applicants. Best of luck to you!

For what it’s worth, I applied SCEA to Yale, and was originally deferred. During the three-month period between December 15th (when I got my deferral letter) and March 28 (the RD decision date, when I was ultimately accepted), I never once felt that I had “wasted my EA app.” Yale was always my first choice, and I felt like I had given it my best shot.

In fact, I think I would have really regretted it had I not applied to Yale SCEA. Just my two cents. If Yale is your top choice (and it seems like it is), then I think you should apply SCEA, because gibby is correct: you are a qualified applicant. Now just start brainstorming ways to distinguish yourself from the other thousands of qualified applicants who will be applying for the same 600-700 spots in the EA round. I noticed that you are a musician - perhaps an arts supplement if you are really accomplished?

I got my subject test scores. Math: 800, USH: 700. I’m taking the French one next fall for colleges that require 3. I want to take another one w/ French. Should I retake USH or should I try another one like Bio or Chem?

You only need 2 SAT II’s and the scores you have are fine. Take the French one, as planned and don’t worry about retaking US History or taking Bio or Chem. Next fall you’re going to need the extra time to work on your essays and complete all your applications on time – along with keeping up with all of your school work.

@gibby, hi gibby I have a similar dilemma in terms of applying EA to schools like UChicago or SCEA Yale, would you mind taking a look at my thread and see if I have a realistic shot at SCEA? thanks!

Don’t worry about “wasting” your early application by applying SCEA to Yale. If Yale is your number one choice, GO FOR IT! I think a lot of students need to understand that applications aren’t about strategy. They are about genuine honesty, passion, and a true excitement for learning.
