I'm thinking about applying as a bio major. But I know that Stanford bio is really competitive. Would it be a good idea to go undecided and then switch soon if I get in?

Somebody needs to pin a post on this, because it's been repeated...

You do not apply to a specific major or school within Stanford. Putting something on your application is just because the admin officers are curious, I think... I don't believe there are any quotas because Stanford is wonderfully flexible and encourages students to explore before declaring a major in their junior year. You can also change majors. Some majors require an application, but many (including bio) don't require an application. Stanford wants you to find something you love. :)

To add on to what celestial said, I've talked to Stanford admissions counselors, and they've all said that the "prospective major" part of the application is simply for statistical purposes.

ok thanks. I guess I'll write down bio then
