I've heard of Isaara and Azaad, but I've never formally danced before and I was wondering which one would be easier to get into. I am aware that Azaad has tryouts in the coming week. Thanks for reading this!

There’s only one HFD team. It was called Ishaara ~2 years ago and is now called Azaad.

You have to be pretty good to get on it, but they do take a lot of freshmen so you have a shot.

^thanks for the info flutterfly!

PS: why did they change the name from Ishaara to Azaad? I liked the name Ishaara better lol

probably because Ishaara got kind of famous with the America’s Got Talent thing and the people wanted to keep the name after they graduated. I like Ishaara better too lol

How does joining the Indian dance team mean I could be an Indian that segregates him-or-herself…sigh this sounds really similar to this argument: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/892964-lots-hindu-girls-cal.html?highlight=Hindu+girls+Cal . No I do not plan on ever segregating myself and I don’t support or endorse racial segregation/sequestering of any kind. Sheesh sorry I know you didn’t mean it in an accusatory way but I’ve heard that a lot being said about Indian people her at Cal and I wonder why they do that. Lol I hang out and make friends with people based on their inner personalities and experiences, not on their outward traits.

PS: I’m technically not Indian since my parents are from Malaysia, although I am Hindu. (My grandparents on both sides are from India though)

“I meet some of them in classes, and then add them on facebook and I notice that there walls are dominated by posts from other Indians, their profile pictures are filled with pictures of them with only Indian friends, and they cling to each other when they walk to classes. I really don’t know why they do it, but they just do…”

I agree, but the same can be said for all ethnic groups at Cal: white, Asian, black, Hispanic, etc. etc. It’s unfortunate, but self-segregation is what often ends up happening in practice. It doesn’t help that people of all groups also carry subconscious preconceptions of other groups; I obviously don’t mean outright prejudices (though I can’t speak for all cases), but people are often steered toward others of their own ethnic group by subtle, sometimes ingrained preferences. I just wish people would give others more of a chance to get to know each other first before already mentally crossing them off from potential friend status just based on what they think the other person’s culture is and how it influences their personality.

Sorry for derailing the thread, carry on with the Indian dance teams discussion haha.

Yeah LH I know you didn’t mean anything in a bad way, I apologize for the giant overreacting paragraph, in fact LH I think I kinda agree with you since I have seen that “ganging together” as well. It is odd to see that but I have a few theories as to why it happens but I don’t want to start a debate thread so I’ll keep them to myself lol. Personally coming from Idaho I am so used to just having European-American (white or w/e the politically correct term is lol) friends that I’m actually glad that i now have friends from other races so as to open my view on other perspectives and cultures from all over the country and the world.

But yeah, back to dance, anybody here who is on the team? What’s it like what’s hte practice schedule each week since I’m in engineering and I kinda want to have an idea as to how much time dance will take. Thanks for the present posts and I look forward to new ones!
