good international relations/political summer programs???

hey guys, im the second post!!! ok ill stop being greedy... well, would anyone happen to know of any very good and INTERESTING summer programs for people looking to major international relations or political science in college? around those fields will also do.

thanks again!!!

Will you be a junior this coming fall? You can apply for the Congressional Page Program. It's pretty competitive, but it's definitely worth the experience. Room & board is free at the White House. You conduct a lot of duties as a page, so it's really cool.

http://www.house.gov/petri/pageprog.htm

Getting into the Congressional Page Program is hard. You have to be a competitive applicant. Plus, it's really hard to get in if you don't have a highly ranked Senator or Congress(wo)man.

I recommend that you look into the summer program at Brown University. Like you, I'm interested in majoring in political science or international relations. Last summer, I took an amazing class on globalization.

yea the brown program is one of my top choices too! is it really competitive???

oh and no, i will be a senior. can i still do the white house thing? sounds very interesting....

thanks so far!

You won't be able to do the Congressional Page thing, as they're juniors. Had I known about it earlier, I most definitely would have applied...

You should also check out the Oxford Tradition (which I've plugged in other forums) which was AMAZING. True college experience, excellent classes most likely taught by Rhodes or Marshall Scholars...in beautiful Oxford, England.

I'm assuming that you're asking for next summer, after you've graduated? If so, you might want to consider an internship or job in an IR or gov related field..much better htan a summer program bc youll be making, rather than spendin,g money (on tuition et al)

TASP had an international affairs seminar this year.

I did UMiami's global politics program and it was great. It was a small group of people (only 5 of us) and the professors were AMAZING. The international relations professor is pretty reknowned for her work is on the US-China Relations committee, which is pretty heavy duty. One weekend we were there she popped up to Washington to meet with senators like it was nothing, and the day we left she too flew out to Beijing. Very cool person.

It might not be the most reknowned or prestigious program, but you do learn a ton and that's all that really matters, right? And generally the global politics group is the smallest so much of what you do it discussion based and centers around current news.

for a week, check out presdential classroom!

any of them still appliable for this year?

Congressional pages are housed at their respective Page Dormitories, not the White House.

i think georgetown has a pretty good one, but idk if its still open

About TASP, is there anything like it that is perhaps a little EASIER to get into?

Also, what's the difference between the Georgetown and Brown program?

Regarding TASP:

They only have one foreign affairs seminar (Cornell I), and this year it was pretty hard to get into. The acceptance rate was 9 percent...I think? Anyhow, 900 some applied and only 80ish got accepted. TASP is very competitive.

anything that's like TASP?

bump, have the same question--what programs are like TASP that might be a little more realistic acceptance-wise (I'm still planning on giving TASP a shot, though)

http://www.globalscholar.org/

This is the international relations/political summer program that I will be attending this summer. I'm not sure how prestigious it is but it definitely sounds worthwile based on the activities that are planned in it and the amazingly qualified faculty that's overseeing the seminar. It's too late to apply for this year I believe but generally this 2-week seminar from July 2nd to July 15th is open to all rising juniors and seniors and costs $1500, unless you get a scholarship.

i will second the recommendation on the global scholar program. It looks excellent! My son applied and was accepted and got a 50% scholarship -- but he won't be going. He was selected for a scholarship program that will be going to Egypt at the same time. But he really liked the materials and activites from the global scholar program!

Do Oxbridge Academic Programs. Its through the whole month of July and you can choose programs in Oxford or Cambridge England, Paris and they just added Madrid. I did my program in Oxford and stayed at Pembroke and loved it. Most of the faculty at the program are Oxford professors if you do that one and the assistants are usually Oxford students. You get lots of free time to explore on your own too which is cool and i love english people lol. My Major was International Relations and Minor was Journalism.
It's a tad costly though. Tuition is $5,700 not including airfare but meals are provided. And there are a limited # of scholarships.
What better way to show colleges your interest in international affairs than through a summer program in an international setting. Also some of the friends I made their got high school credit for the course work they did during the program.

i know its also possible to be a house or senate page during the school year (i think you have to take classes at like 4am or something crazy!) but cant find the application information anywhere! Also, does anyone know if you have to be the same party as your congressperson or senator?

The Page application isn't available online-- there's not official website and unless your representative/senator has a downloadable copy on his/her website, you're going to need to call. You need to call first anyway, to see if your rep/senator can even sponsor a page-- mine couldn't. From there they will send you an application. You don't NEED to be the same party as your rep/senator, but the program is highly competitive and so if you're not of the right party then you are at a disadvantage. However, it never asks you on the application which party you are so even if you're the wrong party I don't think they'll know. Classes start at 6:45 am by the way-- not quite as bad as 4 AM but still rough. Especially because you have to walk to school, there's no bus or car to drive you. And those Washington mornings can be freezing! So anyway, definitely call your senator and representatives offices, if you apply to both you have a better chance of getting into at least one. And do it now, because the deadline is coming up if it hasn't already passed.
