Good Japanese Language Programs at BS

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has had a child who is studying/has studied Japanese at any of the boarding schools. If yes, did your child like the program and how good is/was the program.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Not from personal experience, but a quick search shows that Andover and Exeter have Japanese. Not many schools offer it.

FWIW, St Paul’s also offers Japanese. But we also have no personal experience with it.

Thanks for the input. I guess if my daughter decides to apply to BS, she is going to be facing some stiff competition as Japanese language studies are a must for her. :)

Personally I would not let love of a language stand in my way of deciding whether a particular boarding school is a good fit or not. Many high schoolers, including boarding school kids, accelerate their math skills through online learning (like Khan) or summer courses and institutes. I am very skeptical of the way foreign language is taught and boarding school and college-- unless one wants to be a scholar of the history or some particular subset of the history of that nation/culture. For most learners, they will be better served by immersion experiences, audio programs like Pimsleur/Rosetta Stone, etc. Don’t dissuade your daughter from her interest in Japanese, but also don’t assume that the BS classroom is the best place to learn it. A variety of alternatives are out there.

My D really wanted Japanese to be offered wherever she went to BS, and yeah, it’s quite rare. However, she did apply to some schools that didn’t offer Japanese because she had a couple of other, deal-breaker requirements.

Out of all the schools she visited, one became her far and away first choice and it did not offer Japanese, but she got in and loves it. Japanese is still on her list, maybe in college and/or maybe immersion at some point. She does a little self-guided study inbetween her BS studies.
