good LACs for history?

Thinking about transferring from my current school...so looking for some insight on schools with good history departments. I'm interested mainly in World History, but pretty much love any type of history. Also kind of interested in taking some anthropology courses.

Any suggestions for schools that:

-have a good history department that offers a variety of courses every semester - my main problem with my current school is that classes just aren't offered a lot and there aren't that many offered at a time
-in the East, doesn't necessarily have to be in the northeast, but nothing too south
-medium sized
-have some sort of equestrian team

Pick any of the medium to large sized LACs with equestrian teams - the history departments will be virtually interchangeable, with the faculty getting their Ph.Ds from the same places. Equestrian teams are rarer.

Maybe this site will help:

[College or University Equestrian Teams](http://www.horse101.com/topics/Disciplines/College_and_University_Equestrian_Teams.html)

Bowdoin College
Brown University (basically a LAC)
Colgate University
Grinnell College
Hampen-Sydney College
Haverford College
Hillsdale College
Kenyon College
Oberlin College
Trinity College

For history, don’t know about equestrian.

Brown University Bears (as ironmetal put it, pretty much a lac)
Colgate University Raiders
Kenyon College Lords and Ladies
Gettysburg College Bullets
Bowdoin College Polar Bears
Colby College Mules
Bates College Bobcats
Amherst College Lord Jeffs
Williams College Ephs

No idea about Equestrian

Go to ihsainc.com, in the menu on the left, click on General Info, then click on Current Teams, and you will find the list of all colleges that have a team (hunter seat or stock seat) this year. I checked on a few that I knew had coaching changes and the changes are there so I assume it is fairly up to date. It will also let you see colleges listed by their Zone, so that will break it down geographically for you.

Then you can look at the history depts. of any that look interesting to you.

Here are the best schools for History Majors:

Bowdoin College
Brown University
Centre College
Colgate University
College Of The Holy Cross
Columbia University
Drew University
Furman University
Georgetown University
Grinnell College
Hampden-Sydney College
Harvard College
Haverford College
Hillsdale College
Kenyon College
Oberlin College
Princeton University
Trinity College (CT)
Tulane University
University Of Virginia
Wabash College
Washington And Lee University
Yale University

I wouldn’t worry about schools for history majors in the least. All of the top 50 LACs have good history departments, all with faculty Ph.Ds from the same schools, and you can check each for your special interests.

Concentrate on the equestrian part of your question, if that is important.

It is important, but I basically picked my school for the riding this time around and it didn’t work out…the eq team is basically the only thing I like about this school atm. I like being on a team but it isn’t necessarily a requirement, I could find a barn anywhere. I want better opportunities academically.

You don’t give your gender, but if you are a woman, I’d suggest Mt. Holyoke and Smith. Both have really good history departments and equestrian teams. Mt. Holyoke welcomes transfers, and I would imagine that Smith does too, though I don’t have personal experience there. I have sent students to Mt. Holyoke. It just worked out that way, not because I thought it a better school.

Yes, I am female. I didn’t consider all-womens colleges when I was first looking because I thought I really wanted to go coed again (did the single-sex high school thing) but I think I’ve changed my mind about that. MHC is one school that I think I’m definitely going to consider.
