Good language programs

I'm planning to start studying a new language at UCSD so are there any particular programs that are strong? Good professors are a definite bonus!

shouldn’t you have a particular interest in mind rather than just deciding on a language because the program/professor is good? you’ll rarely have the same professor after one quarter, so it doesn’t make sense to make that the priority.

as for ‘programs,’ most languages start off in the linguistics department – LIFR, LISP, etc…

I can’t make up my mind…thus the thread question! I’ve narrowed it down to Arabic, Latin and Spanish. Any thoughts?

Take Chinese or Spanish. Might as well be practical.

Spanish!

(ten char)

Chinese.

“The implication is clear, many experts say. China has the will and the means to supplant the United States by midcentury as the world’s pre-eminent economic power.” [From today’s San Francisco Chronicle]

russian…

japanese :P

What kind of jobs are you thinking about? I’ve been learning Latin for years now and just started dabbling with Arabic. Latin because it’s a GREAT base for romance langauges - so if you’re interested in learning MORE languages later on, Latin is always great. Arabic.. well it’s has a huge base of native speakers and I’ve looked into it because it’s on the super critical languages list for foreign service officers with the State Dept. Spanish is good obviously because of the large Hispanic population in the USA, so for a lot of jobs, Spanish is a must. I think it all depends on what you want for your career or simply what you’re most interested in.

Yup I think Latin or Spanish makes the most sense. Thanks for all the help!! Go languages!!!
