Good Liberal Arts Schools for Pre Med?

Hi I am interested in doing pre med at liberal arts schools. I plan on being a non science major(psychology). Anyone know good LACs in the northeast(preferred not a must).
What I like:
1.good research opportunities
2.pretty rural/suburban campus
3.little preppy but not too artsy
4.not a lot of grade deflation(I am aware that I have to work verrrrrry hard but I don’t want to screw myself over lol)

Any ideas would be lots of help!!! Need some schools to apply to this summer and visit lol

These articles can help you identify colleges that match several of your preferences:

Rhodes College and the College of Wooster are worth exploring given your criteria.

Are you looking for reaches, matches, safeties, or all three kinds? Also, have you considered your finances? A lot of the best LACs have good financial aid if you qualify, but if you don’t, then they can be expensive (which isn’t good for a premed student).

I am looking for more match/reach/safety schools. I don’t want to spend a lot of money for undergrad since med school is the end goal right now.
Any ideas for good match schools(35-50% acceptance rate) would be appreciated!

What’s your budget? Stats? Home state? No one can help you form a realistic list without the basics ; ).

To give you match schools we need to know your stats.
To know if colleges are affordable, we need to know what “affordable” means to your family + your EFC.

My stats:
UW:3.85 W:4.12
ACT:32(going to study this summer to increases this)
I am taking subjects this summer/fall
EC: President of 3 Clubs(co founder of 2), Hospital volunteer, did some programs at a medical school(4 years), doing a program at the cancer institute in my state this summer, member of 4 clubs, leadership conference, had a job, Sunday school teacher assistance, and a stem program.
No awards and I am going to take in total 7 APs, but I will submit 2 of my scores.
I am a minority student with immigrant parents if that helps.
Also my parents income is :<$200k

Run the NPC on colleges listed so far.

Meeting all criteria, I’d suggest St Olaf

  • professors selected because of their ability to include students in research + opportunities with Mayo clinic
  • nice campus in a college town 45mn South of Minneapolis
  • down to earth and friendly
  • not known for grade deflation (but you do need to work hard)

That is a huge range that gives no information on your financial limits.

Get together with your parents and run the net price calculator on the web site of each college of interest.

Dickinson?

Seconding Dickinson.
Run the NPC on St Olaf, Dickinson, and Rhodes. Look at their merit opportunities.

Calculate your EFC. Can your parents at it? (Most can’t).
Talk with your parents about budget. This is a limiting factor for almost all applicants.

Most LACs are going to cost a minimum of around $35K a year even with merit based on the limited amount of Financial data you have given. Depending on your state but it’s likely you could find a public that’s going to be significantly cheaper. What state do you reside?

OMG - you described W&L. Lots of money awarded, even if you don’t win the Johnson Scholarship; small, quaint town; preppy, but plenty of diverse kids (and the school is working HARD to attract more); lots of alumnae support; academic but fun. My did loves the outdoorsy-ness and the town.

During Spring Term W&L has a four week program for pre-meds in Richmond.

New College of Florida is a LAC with a lot of students going on to med school. It’s in Florida. OOS tuition, after the OOS scholarship, comes out to about $15k.

Dickinson is definitely worth a look. I’ll add Washington & Jefferson, Allegheny, Juniata, Susquehanna, and Franklin & Marshall. Franklin & Marshall doesn’t give merit aid though, so run the NPC first (actually, do that with any school to be sure it’s affordable). The others might have merit aid for you. All of these are in PA. I’m sure there are more I’m not thinking of right now too.

Muhlenberg will give decent merit aid for those numbers and does a good job of pre-med. Suburban Allentown, some greek, a solid midwestern-nice campus feel, and they always seem to be looking for diversity.

Have you considered looking at schools that are on LECOM’s Early Acceptance list? I will be attending Washington & Jefferson this fall as a bio major not only because I loved the school for the reasons you are describing and more, but also because I was interviewed and received early acceptance into their 4+4 Dental program. Of course, it is important to find a school that you will love regardless of your plans for graduate school, but I know that having this plan in place is definitely reassuring. There is a list on LECOM’s website that shows affiliated undergrads and tons of them are LACs in the northeast

Hi aprilboni,
How was your experience at W&J? I am planning to start there this fall. I got selected for 4+4 LECOM’s BS DO program.
