challenging classes, and expecting good rec letters

List:
Berkeley
Pomona
UT Austin
Austin College
Oberlin

What others can I add? I don't think I have a very good range of schools here.

bump . . . . .

I'd say their all match's except Berkeley. It's really hard to get in if your out of state.

are there any reasonable reach schools i can add? i'm not sure if i still want to apply to oberlin or ut austin.

What do you want to major in?

I would add Reed (if you are looking for a liberal arts college) and Rice (if you are looking for a larger school). Of course, all is dependent upon what you are looking for.

Pink - some info on your academic and career interests would help

a humanities related major - i would like to become a writer

"I'd say their all match's except Berkeley. It's really hard to get in if your out of state.
"

uh..... im gonna have to disagree, id say Pomona is also reach. (the average SAT for acceptees last year was 1490)

I like liberal arts schools for writers. Definitely investigate Kenyon. Others to consider, from higher selectivity to lower: Wesleyan, Barnard, Vassar and Bard. Reed per Icemaker (above).

thanks for the suggestions. do u think pomona is a reasonable school to put on my list? and also somebody suggested rice; how are their humanities programs?

as a liberal arts school, i can't imagine reed has bad humanities, but i don't know how good they are. I think Pomona is a reasonable reach

Pomona is a reach, but a 4.0 UW average with a challenging schedule is a very significant achievement, and it makes you a solid candidate.

Regarding Rice, it is best-known for science, engineering and architecture, but it is an excellent school with great student advising and small classes for a university. Houston's traffic and weather are problematic, but if you stay on campus you can probably live with both. On the surface, the English department courses and faculty look pretty good.

Per my earlier post, I would definitely take another look at more liberal arts schools and fill your list out a bit.

How about looking at:

Grinnell
Macalester
John's Hopkins (great for humanities)
URochester (like JHU, an awesome school for non-science majors)
Davidson
Occidental
Skidmore
Denison U
Lewis & Clark
Whitman
St. John's (MD & AZ)

Hope this helps some.
:)

You have a weird mix of huge school, small school, urban school, rural school. Is there any focus? How did you come up with Berkeley?

ya, i was looking at berkeley because of the strength of its english dept. and i think i would like the atmosphere. but i wouldnt mind a smaller student community either, if i were to go to a liberal arts school. :)

I would add Whitman to your list. You seem to be a good match with this school.
