good major for journalism?

a lot of colleges don't offer a specific journalism major. i want to go into journalism but i'm not absolute sure so that's why i'm not set on a preprofessional school with a journalism major. would a major in comparative literature be useful if i decide to pursue journalism in the future? many of the schools i'm interested in have this concentration and i'm genuinely interested in different literatures. any help would be appreciated!

If you want to go into general journalism, such as reporting, any english related major will suffice (English, comparative literature, creative writing, etc..).

Since you aren't even sure if you want to do journalism, I would highly recommend majoring in the subject that really interests you. This will greatly benifit you in three ways:

1) You are studying what you truly love, not something to make money.

2) You will either be able to pursue a career in your major, or a career in journalism writing about your major. This is a win win situation for you.

3) Some newspaper employers actually prefer non journalism students for columnist positions, since they know the subject, not just writing. If you can get a degree, you can write. Employers know this and will consider your knowledge in a specific field far more valuable than knowledge specifically on writing.

hey thanks a lot!

You can also double major or minor in a writing-intensive field (english, comparative literature) and a major that you love (sociology, biology, international studies, etc.). If you're interested in a science magazine, the extra science courses will definitely help.
